Necrophosis Review- My winner for “Best Art Direction” this year

A Necrophosis review on PC with Xbox Play Everywhere

So I was blessed by Dragonis Games with a code for Necrophosis, and I promise you I have never blown straight through a game faster.

To start, Necrophosis is about a 3-4 hour game with very straightforward gameplay Experience. You find something, figure out where said something goes and either receive your next something or start the Cycle over again, and to be honest that may very well be the whole Lore theme of the game.

Necrophosis labels itself as a first-person horror adventure game, and granted it is definitely an ADVENTURE. I don’t know if I would call it a horror game in a scary sense. I’m sure that to the average consumer this game is disturbing and maybe at times hard to play but if i was to write a description for Necrophosis. It would be a “Atmospheric Cosmic Horror Game with soft Puzzles”

From the moment you start your first cycle the Atmosphere lures you in. As you start uncovering lore laid throughout the world, it feels like the Atmosphere seems to really amplify itself even if it’s only subconsciously. And as someone who is very aware of the work of Giger, Lovecraft and Beksiński. I almost felt like this was made for me. There were times when playing that I felt as if I was playing a game inside a piece crafted by Beksiński.

Puzzles

When I say the puzzles in this game are soft. I really just mean they are very low difficulty, but to be honest i dont know if I think it would make the game better if they were harder. Because I don’t even think that’s what I truly enjoyed in this game.

I came and stayed with this game because in the first 15 minutes I was stopping in awe of the art that this studio had produced, and in the last 15 minutes of the game I was doing the same thing.

Story

The story is very interesting if you have ever had your interest peaked by anything Cosmic Horror. I’ve Spent a long time trying to decide what to tell you about his story without ruining the game for you, and i think ill just leave you with this for the Story. This world has found itself stuck in perpetual timeless decay and the cycle must be broken.

DLC

There is a Minor DLC named Subconsciousness. I thought it was alright. I think they could have done better. They clearly received feedback at some point saving the puzzles where lacking and so they made a sort Cycle that feels extremely puzzle dense, and yes I mean dense not more challenging. As the cycle is short and feels strange when it comes to the world’s lore considering how the game ends. The cycle almost feels like cut content that got repurposed and readapted to explain those who came before without really explaining why your character is there.

My Final Thoughts on Necrophosis

Necrophosis is easily my winner for “Best Art Direction” this year and it would wouldn’t be hard to convince me that they should be in the running for “Best Adaptation” with the work done to essentially bring Zdzisław Beksiński’s work to life in a video game. That being said, people are inevitably going to compare this game to “Skorn” for its similar approach to H.R Giger’s work. And I do believe they do have similarities, but there was a point when I got bored playing Skorn. I started Necrophosis and didn’t move till it was over. Skorn is definitely higher fidelity than this game and I thought at times man imagine this game having with extremely High resolution assets like Skorn, but ultimately Necrophosis is in a whole league of its own and that’s why it gets a 9/10 from me, and i cant wait to see what comes next from Dragonis Games.

P.s if there is not an Artbook and Original Music soundtrack released i will be very disappointed.

9/10
