Legendary RPG publisher Owlcat Games, alongside developer Emotion Spark Studio, announced the release date for the upcoming narrative RPG Rue Valley!
Rue Valley is an isometric narrative RPG following a man caught in a time loop where each reset changes not only what he can do, but who he becomes. Players carry memories across these loops, unlocking new dialogue options, mindsets for decision making, and creative ways to interact with the strange world around Rue Valley, utilizing memory, empathy, and a fair deal of strategy to succeed in their mission to uncover the truth. During their journey, the player will encounter a captivating ensemble of unique and interesting characters, each dealing with their own emotional complexities and revealing hidden depths to their personalities as you get to know them with each passing loop.
Drawing inspiration from games like Disco Elysium, Rue Valley provides players with the unique opportunity to navigate an evolving emotional story with impactful decisions and difficult choices, an inspired sci-fi narrative, and a great deal of imaginative game design. The player must guide the main character through the depths of his own struggles and mental challenges, all-the-while seeking out the source of the mysterious anomaly causing the unexplainable time loop. With each followed path and affected narrative arc influencing an element of his personality profile that will later alter the protagonist’s interactions with the world around them.
This mechanic allows for the player to embark on a journey of self-discovery and resilience as they delve deeper into the enigmatic reaches of the small godforsaken town of Rue Valley, with each day feeling like an uphill battle against the shadows of the protagonist’s own mind as well as the mysteries that plague the town. Will you find the strength and mental fortitude to rise above adversity and solve the near-impossible riddles of existence in a strange world, or will you choose to become a cold-hearted, over-calculating loner, a severely anxious worrier with difficulty connecting with others, or perhaps a melodramatic loudmouth with a chip on his shoulder?
You’ll have the ability to store memories in a graph, unlocking intentions and mindsets as you uniquely progress through each run. Whether you choose to commit to quirky mindsets for unexpectedly hilarious dialogue routes and personality alterations like becoming more outgoing when drunk or extra sensitive when anxious or perhaps experimenting with the timelines to be a little more resilient, the choice is up to you how things play out. All of this creatively crafted gameplay and expertly written dialogue is wrapped in the comic book aesthetic akin to something like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but with its own audio/visual quirks to set it apart.
