Capcom at Gamescom | New Resident Evil, Onimusha, and Monster Hunter Gameplay

Capcom just took center stage at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025 to showcase some exciting new trailer reveals for Resident Evil Requiem and Onimusha: Way of the Sword, as well to announce a special collaboration event between Monster Hunter Wilds and FINAL FANTASY XIV Online.

Amidst the already insane number of amazing upcoming horror and thriller titles, one stands out from the pack, much as every entry in the storied franchise has, at least for me personally. Resident Evil Requiem appears to be an RE game for new fans and returning veterans alike, and the latest gameplay footage provided a grim and gory glimpse into protagonist Grace Ashcroft’s dark past involving her mother, and the events that led to her supposed demise.

The new entry takes place 30 years after the viral outbreak in Raccoon City that set off the chain of events that led to near-total global saturation. Grace Ashcroft, daughter of Resident Evil Outbreak protagonist and investigative journalist Alyssa Ashcroft, is assigned the chilling case of a lifetime where the young FBI analyst must return to the setting of her most difficult moments and face her tragic memories head-on.

Grace is a bit on the introverted side and is fairly jumpy and easily spooked. This type of character hasn’t been explored much in the Resident Evil series, as the overwhelming majority of the games’ protagonists have been mostly brave, specially trained, and ready for action. Grace on the other hand is more timid and meek, though trained with firearms as per protocol for her position within the FBI, she will likely rely more on her analytical skills of rational reasoning and deduction to handle whatever threats and obstacles are thrown her way.

Utilizing the gorgeous and ever impressive RE Engine, the team has worked tirelessly to ensure that the level of realism and detail is unprecedented, including incredible animations and graphical nuances that will bring the characters, the enemies, and the world to life with an immersion like no other in the series. The gameplay showed off during the previous Capcom Spotlight featured the different camera perspectives that the player will be able to choose from, this time including the choice between both first-person and third-person, much to the pleasure of the fan base.

The legendary Resident Evil series will also celebrate its glorious 30th anniversary in March 2026. In anticipation of this milestone, Capcom has revealed a 30th anniversary logo alongside a special illustration featuring Grace and other characters from the franchise’s storied history.

This new era of survival horror is creeping onto PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam on February 27th, 2026.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword also got an exhilarating new trailer that delved into some new interior and exterior environments that were equal parts beautiful and haunting. The swordplay, archery, and dual-edged blade were flashy and incredibly impressive, while the enemy designs were inspired and at-times grotesque.

The game follows legendary swordsman Musashi Miyamoto as he wields new and returning powers from the franchise, as well as a powerful blade and the skill to use it. Players will be able to utilize deflection to defensively reflect attacks back towards enemies which will be especially useful for projectiles and will also be able to execute perfectly timed parries to block incoming attacks that can stagger foes while allowing for counterattacks, knock-backs, and even chain staggers by knocking enemies into their allies.

If that somehow isn’t already enough to get the job done, Miyamoto can enter the Blazing State where he can temporarily trigger an offensive power-up by landing multiple parries that generate Blue Souls to fuel special attacks using Oni Power; think Devil Trigger from Devil May Cry. Of course, Soul Absorption has also returned as it is a staple of the beloved franchise, allowing for players to recover health, enhance equipment, unlock new and exciting abilities, and more. Issen is another sweet strategy from the franchise that gives players the opportunity to gamble with their life by attempting to deliver a punishing blow right as an enemy is about to land their strike; this could get you killed, but it could also turn the tide of battle.

In the dim depths beneath Kyoto lies a secret laboratory where a sinister and enigmatic entity known as Dokyo toils away creating new Genma. Her twisted creations include the Greater Nue (a ferocious, Chimeric beast that can harness the power of lightning), the Kogashira (humans warped by parasitic genma that create poisonous clouds of Malice), and the Chijiko (a grotesque mass of interwoven human faces with far-reaching tentacles).

Frankly, the designs are quite a bit more impressive than many others from the series, and I would argue that they are equally as intriguing as those of Resident Evil and Kunitsu-Gami. It almost feels like a creepy combination of the two classics, though Onimusha always did feel a lot like a Samurai RE.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword approaches its 2026 release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.

During the Gamescom ONL Capcom showcase, fantasy worlds collided as Monster Hunter Wilds producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and Naoki Yoshida, director and producer of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, shared the state to reveal a major mutual collaboration between the popular role-playing games! If it’s anything like the crossover events in previous Monster Hunter titles, the pairing is sure to be fun, surprising, and unlock a lot of great content for fans of both games.

The special collaboration is set to arrive in late September alongside the Monster Hunter Wilds free Title Update 3, which will include familiar elements from the world of Final Fantasy including the appearance of Chocobos in the Forbidden Lands. Hunters can also look forward to taking on the formidable robotic superboss Omega Planetes in an all-new narrative quest!

Capcom also announced the first-ever Monster Hunter Wilds US Championship will take place in San Diego, California on Friday, October 17, 2025. The top six teams will battle for first place live from the Capcom booth at TwitchCon San Diego. Details regarding registration and tournament rules can be found at the official US Championship webpage.
