From Trio to Duo: FromSoftware Brings 2-Player Co-Op Combat to Elden Ring Nightreign

Elden Ring Nightreign launched with a large player base and is still holding steady. The community from the beginning has begged FromSoftware to add a two-player mode to the game. FromSoftware is finally giving players what they want by adding the option this Wednesday, July 30th. Having played Elden Ring Nightreign, I can confirm that adding this mode is huge for the game and will remove many of the frustrations that come with the title.

Unfortunately, the game is balanced for three players, not two, so it is essentially impossible for you and your remaining teammate to have a successful run when one player drops out. Whenever this happens, I or the other player usually give up and leave the game. This results in a complete waste of time since players only get rewarded for a completed or failed run but receive nothing if they just leave the game.  I am hoping this added mode comes with proper balancing where a third player is truly not needed any more.

Since Elden Ring Nightreign doesn’t allow in-game voice chat, many players that are playing with one friend have no in-game way to communicate with the third player either. Elden Ring Nightreign requires meticulous planning and strategy, so playing with randoms is inherently more difficult than playing with a friend over private chat.  While the two-player mode should have been included at launch, it is still exciting that FromSoftware is making good on their promise to add this feature, and I strongly believe that it will make this already solid game even better.

Again, two-player mode launches for Elden Ring Nightreign Wednesday, July 30th, 2025.
