From nano-fiber stealth suits that render you invisible to the naked eye to hulking exoskeletons bristling with heavy-caliber weaponry, video games celebrate the boundless creativity of armor design. They invite players to slip into gear that doesn’t just protect them, but transforms them, whether by granting superhuman strength and agility, plasma and laser shielding, or literally turning them into a one-man war machine. Every piece of armor tells its own story, from the scavenged scrap-metal plating of post-apocalyptic survivors to the sleek, bio-engineered shells of futuristic soldiers. Together, these iconic suits remind us that in imaginative worlds, protection and power are limited only by the designer’s vision.
10. CryNet Nanosuit (Crysis)

The CryNet Nanosuit is a revolutionary ballistic and environmental exosuit that channels nanofibril muscle fibers to grant Armor, Strength, Speed, and Cloak modes at the press of a button, effectively reprogramming physiology for near-invulnerability, superhuman leaps and movement, and temporary invisibility. Its hydro-thrusters and rebreather systems allow the wearer to traverse zero-gravity and underwater environments, while the integrated visor and data network tag enemies, relay topographic data, and even hack Ceph machinery mid-battle. By merging advanced nanotechnology with adaptive armor, Crysis’s Nanosuit became paramount for the series’ core gameplay hook and remains a milestone in character-driven power fantasy. Whether the player wanted to play as a gun-fighting tank, a stealthy saboteur, or something in between, the suit allowed for player agency when taking on foes.
9. Daedric Armor (Skyrim)

Daedric Armor combines ebony ingots, Daedra hearts, and black soul gems into an equal parts terrifying and awesome ensemble of spiked pauldrons, glowing crimson runes, and a horned helmet that instills fear in nearly anyone that is unfortunate enough to meet a wearer of this dark-forged plate. This armor boasts the highest base stats in Skyrim’s heavy category, while legendary-quality tempering bolstered by the Daedric Smithing perk elevates its defense even further. Its crimson glimmer from the shadows and against a dark night sky evokes the malevolent Daedric Princes themselves and brings with it fear and respect for the wearer. Encountering a Dremora clad in this armor is to face a demon of Oblivion on Tamrielic soil that typically provide for an intense battle for even the most seasoned Skyrim vet. The Daedric Armor’s Gothic design and gameplay supremacy have made it a high-fantasy fan favorite, and one that I always find myself rushing to craft as soon as possible on each new heavily armored character.
8. N7 Armor (Mass Effect)

Commander Shepard’s default N7 Armor blends ceramic ablative plates and kinetic padding into a modular four-piece system that boosts weapons, biotic, and tech damage while increasing health and shields. Across Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, its evolving aesthetics, from smooth, carbon fiber-textured shells to angled soldier-model combat gear, retain the N7’s signature black-and-red motif and iconic symbolism, with each armor locker swap granting small but tactical attribute changes for direct gameplay impact. As an Alliance special forces icon, N7 Armor underscores Shepard’s journey from soldier to galaxy-saving hero. With the sequels in the series allowing for deeper customization of the armor through cosmetic alterations, players can truly make the familiar suit all their own, further adding to the roleplaying elements that the series is known and loved for.
7. Big Daddy Suit (BioShock)

The Big Daddy diving suit in Rapture is a grotesque yet iconic fusion of Deep One-derived power armor with a bioluminescent marine helmet, housing what’s left of a human whose organs have bonded with heavy canvas and pressure cabling for underwater patrol duties and protection of the ever-precious Little Sisters. Created by splicing and ADAM-driven conditioning, Bouncer variants wield a drill, while Rosie models carry a riveting hydraulics arm as they defend their Little Sisters against splicer attacks in fluid, lumbering glory. Their tragic role as both victims and guardians elevates BioShock’s exploration of humanity amid dystopian ambition. “A man chooses, a slave obeys.” The role of the armor becomes even more present when in the second game in the series, the player takes on the role of a big daddy, getting to grind up enemies with their drill, wield incredibly overpowered weaponry, and experience what it’s like to be inside the suit that instilled such traumatic fear in the first game.
6. HEV Suit (Half-Life)

The Hazardous Environment Suit (HEV Suit) pairs reactive armor plating, environmental sensors, and a heads-up display narrated by a computerized voice, granting Gordon Freeman limited protection against radiation, toxins, and impacts in Black Mesa’s research complex. The Mark IV debuted with a built-in flashlight, Geiger counter, and auto-med system, while the Mark V upgraded vision zoom, antidote injectors, and auxiliary power for sprinting and decontamination from Combine energy outlets. The HEV suit was prominently featured in marketing to emphasize the game’s immersive sci-fi setting and reinforce Gordon Freeman’s identity as a scientist thrust into combat, utilizing a sleek design with a memorable and unique colorway. Aside from its gameplay role, the HEV Suit’s familiar orange design became one of Half-Life’s most enduring symbols of resilience in an anomalous world; that, and Gordon’s crowbar!
5. T-60 Power Armor (Fallout)

The T-60 power armor represents the culmination of pre-War military engineering in the Fallout universe. Developed by the United States Military as an upgrade to the venerable T-51 frame, it features reinforced plating, enhanced servo motors, and improved environmental sealing. Worn prominently by the Brotherhood of Steel, the T-60’s rugged silhouette and modular design allow survivors to customize plating, helmet styles, and paintjobs to suit hostile wasteland conditions. Its heavy ballistic and energy resistance make it a coveted relic, symbolizing both technological prowess and the enduring legacy of a lost civilization. Seeing someone in the armor trekking across the wasteland either instills confidence or fear depending on whose wearing it, though both of those feelings become less prevalent when it’s the player themselves stomping around in the walking tank!
4. Engineering RIG (Dead Space)

The Intermediate Engineer RIG stands out as Isaac Clarke’s signature Resource Integration Gear, combining ballistic plating, a holographic health display, and an on-wrist holoprojector to navigate the USG Ishimura’s horrors. Built with a reinforced helmet as well as armored torso and limb plating, the suit offers inventory capacity for health, weapons, ammo, etc., and integrated stasis and kinesis modules that let Isaac freeze environmental and hostile obstacles and telekinetically manipulate objects and enemies to both solve puzzles and survive necromorph onslaughts. The RIG’s biomechanical life-support system, reconfigured morphine injectors, and atmospheric seals deepened Dead Space’s sci-fi survival-horror immersion and lent narrative weight to Isaac’s own struggle against corporate secrecy and cosmic terror. Along with that, the constant changes in appearance through upgrading the suit were always so exciting to see when Isaac would step out of the shop module!
3. Praetor Suit (DOOM)

The Praetor Suit worn by the Doom Slayer in DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal is a sentinel-engineered, Argent-powered exoskeleton that adapts to hellish environments and channels collected energy through capillary tubes to disperse plasma blasts and shield its wearer from incoming damage. Capable of slotting Rune augmentations, armor pickup capacity, and a handful of powerful gear upgrades, its streamlined biomechanical plating and integrated VEGA interface enable hyper-aggressive rip and tear gameplay. Upgraded versions add additional finishers and Equipment Launchers for devastating tactics in Doom Eternal. As an icon of relentless mobility and raw power, the Praetor Suit redefines first-person melee-shooter identity. Why call in an army when the Doom Slayer is available to push back all manner of demonic threat? The Praetor Suit has an iconic look that can be changed through various unlockable cosmetic designs throughout the more recent games, but regardless of what appearance the player selects, the almighty monster-mashing, robot-wrecking, demon-demolishing Doom Slayer is the one being alive who can truly embody what the suit represents!
2. COG Armor (Gears of War)

COG standard-issue Trooper Armor combines osmium and polyethylene fibers into a modular powerhouse with chest shielding that shrugs off Locust gunfire while retaining the wearer’s mobility on the battlefield. Variants such as Hot Weather, Cold Weather, and Commando Armor demonstrate the series’ emphasis on role-specific loadouts, from urban operations to demolition duties and anything in between, each with unique plating, appearance, and integrated survival tools. This blend of high-tech personal protection and gritty utilitarian design cemented Gears’ visual identity and underscored the soldiers’ desperate fight against subterranean horrors. As seen through variations worn by the members of the mainline series, the armor is highly adaptable and customizable to suit the needs of each individual soldier, and in Gears Tactics, players can fully customize the appearance of each piece of armor down to the camouflage pattern and/or colorway. To this day when I see any variation of the classic armor, I think back fondly on memories of brotherhood, overwhelming gun battles, and taking the fight to the grubs!
1. MJOLNIR Mark VI Armor (Halo)

The MJOLNIR Mark VI armor is the culmination of decades of Spartan combat engineering, featuring a multilayer titanium alloy shell with energy shielding reverse-engineered from Covenant technology and a superconducting liquid crystal layer that amplifies strength and reaction time by a factor of five. Underneath the outer plates lies a hydrostatic gel that regulates temperature and locks down joints against heavy-impact injuries, while the inner suit interfaces directly with the wearer’s neural implants to enable sub-millisecond response times. Each suit houses an onboard AI, granting Spartans expanded battlefield awareness and tactical coordination, and the Mark VI’s sleek design and battlefield dominance have made Master Chief’s silhouette as recognizable as any modern gaming icon. The armor has undergone many changes and enhancements throughout the series and offers many customization options across the various multiplayer modes, giving players the ability to tailor the already iconic design to their own preferences.
