New Xbox Updates | Consoles, PC and Mobile Receive Major Changes

In recent years, Microsoft has been consistently expanding their ever-growing ecosystem of multi-platform gaming functionality through their use of the Xbox “Play Anywhere” and “This is an Xbox” initiatives and marketing for their dedicated Cloud Gaming focus, as well as their popular Xbox and PC Game Pass services that provide a constantly evolving library of games that feature cloud functionality and cross-progress to boot.

Xbox has become more than a home console, but rather now a brand that allows gamers the freedom to play what they want from just about anywhere, whether that be on their Xbox, PC, mobile devices, etc. With Microsoft’s recent partnership with Asus to create the upcoming Rog Xbox Ally and Ally X handheld consoles, and their continued partnership with AMD to create an even greater focus on expanding the brand to even more platforms, Xbox is soon to be far less of a console brand and more of a gaming brand in general.

Since 2024, Microsoft has been porting Xbox Game Studios titles to other console brands like PlayStation and Nintendo as well, which has been a pretty clear indication that they were shifting away from exclusivity into a less restrictive gaming community that allow their fans to enjoy content wherever they prefer. After the update back in April that gave players the ability to stream their own game library on Xbox consoles, fans were eager to see what else the company had in store. Well, this month’s update comes with quite a few more innovations of a far greater scope and level of impact on the brand and the industry as a whole.

Microsoft has just dropped the latest Xbox update for the Xbox One, Series X|S, Xbox mobile app, and PC, and it’s a big one! This fresh update brings with it an improved UI with additional customization options, simpler in-game perk discovery, a more consolidated PC games library, extra cloud gaming features, and loads more.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing and even divisive new features is the beta launch for Microsoft’s Copilot for Gaming on mobile, which will also be available on the Rog Xbox Ally when it drops later this year. Copilot serves as an AI companion that is designed to assist players with walkthroughs, game tips, and in-game guidance that will make gaming more accessible to a broader audience.

The most exciting update for many however, is definitely the announcement that Xbox Insiders are currently testing out the new Xbox PC app’s aggregated games library that will allow for Game Pass, Xbox, Battle.net, and other leading storefronts likely including Steam to all populate on one app. If this is a successful endeavor and all goes as planned, there will always be the strong possibility that the feature may see console functionality, perhaps when the new console is released in the coming years as it is currently in development.

For ease of access and simpler discovery of games from players’ favorite studios, new publisher channels have been added to the Game Pass tab in the Xbox PC app as well. As far as Xbox console players are concerned, there is also a new customization option for the “most recently used” section of the dashboard that allows players the ability to pin their favorite games as well as hide system apps for organizational purposes.

Game Hubs are also now available on consoles and offer a deeper overview on chosen games including achievements, available add-ons, time played, and in-game statistics, among other new analytics and the like. This new feature feels very similar to how Steam handles games in the library, though with a unique Xbox format to it.

Apart from that, cloud saving has been improved with a new syncing progress indicators and error messages to indicate to the user in how much time and whether or not the process will be completed. Free-to-play games are now offering a clearer picture of what being a Game Pass Ultimate member will bring with it, providing looks at the various in-game perks such as currencies, skins, characters, weapon charms, and so much more.

I suppose I should also note that while there are rumors of backwards compatible emulation for Xbox and Xbox 360 games on PC under what is reportedly being referred to internally as “Xbox Classics”, there has been no official confirmation of such a project from the company itself. However, Xbox continues its classic games preservation by continuing to add more titles to the Retro Classics collection for players to get a glimpse into a time when video games were in their infancy, but with bug fixes and graphical improvements.

If all of that isn’t enough, there’s also a rumored leak that states that Xbox will be partnering with Meta to announce a Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition VR headset in the coming weeks. Check back with us for updates on the news as we learn more!
