According to rumors from Xbox news leaker extas1s, an insider source at Microsoft has revealed that Xbox is developing a way to play original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on PC through the utilization of emulation. Following this, extas1s goes on to indicate that these would not just be ports or re-releases of previous generation games, but instead they will feature improved graphics, stability, and complete multi-platform integration.
“What Xbox is working on is a new advanced emulation platform designed to run classic Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles with stability, graphical improvements, full integration with Game Pass, PC, current consoles, portable devices like the Ally, and, of course, the cloud.”
Supposedly working with the Xenia team behind the currently operating open-source Xbox 360 PC emulator, Xbox seems to be reaching out to the gaming community to help build something that is sure to not only bring them a great deal of success but also garner them a lot of favor from fans of their older games. If this is true, then Xbox will be offering the ability for gamers to take a virtual trip back in time to revisit some of their favorite games, now with modern enhancements that make them play and present better than ever before.
The project is reportedly being referred to internally as “Xbox Classics” and is slated to be announced during the 25th anniversary events currently planned by Xbox. The company intends to celebrate this major milestone for the brand throughout 2026 with quite a few new game reveals, upcoming console details, and a number of surprise announcements that are likely to include this Xbox Classics project.
I will reiterate that this is only a rumor at present, but after doing a fair bit of research across multiple platforms, it seems that there are quite a few outlets and eager fans that are expressing incredible excitement about the possibility. Even if Xbox isn’t currently developing this backwards compatible emulator, with the growing hype around this rumor, it’s not unlikely that Xbox will take notice and carefully consider their options.
