If you’re like me and remember the days when handheld gaming consoles were a big hit, such as the Nintendo Game Boy, the Nintendo DS, PlayStation’s PSP and PS Vita, those were the times when gaming could be taken wherever you could walk and wherever you wanted to play! Well, as we know, handheld gaming is once again in full swing as we now have handhelds such as the Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 (soon), ROG Ally and hell, if you want to class the BackBone that latches onto your mobile device as one, then go for it! However, we may be in the new dawn of the PSP!

An insider has claimed that a PlayStation handheld console is in the works, aiming to launch alongside the PlayStation 6 (we hope it’s not an online-only handheld), and the rumours are that Sony wants a handheld device on the market and the details for this are really gearing up to be a promising launch. As we know earlier this year, there were already rumours in the mill that Sony were developing a new handheld console. Now to further this news, a new leak has added more excitement to this!
This comes at a time when the PS6 is in development and the handheld could launch at the side of this machine. Both Microsoft and Sony are starting to get more interested in handheld gaming as we look to Sony testing the temperature of the water with the PlayStation portal. The latest information regarding this leak comes from the NeoGAF forums, where a well-known Xbox insider who goes by the name of “HeisenbergFX4” shed some light on the details in response to some fan questions. This leaker claims to have sources close to Sony confirming that they are indeed working on a full-scale PlayStation handheld console.
Now, according to the posts, the upcoming PlayStation handheld won’t just be a minor league upgrade on what we know so far, but a major upgrade that will cost more than the PS Portal and will stand on its own as a real handheld console. HeisenbergFX4 wrote “A full-blown PS Handheld is coming” “timing-wise somewhere around the PS6 Launch”. This means that the new handheld device will be part of Sony’s next generational push for gaming and could see a major leap in handheld gaming!
What we do need to remember is that nothing is 100% concrete until Sony has given the green light to the information. It would indeed be a good move to take this with a grain of salt. However, it certainly wouldn’t surprise me that Sony looks to reengage in the handheld market.
What do you think about a potential new PS Handheld console? Do you think that this could be a big step-up in handhelds? Or do you think we could be looking at a sub-par handheld console compared to the likes of the Steam Decks and Switches? Let us know in the comments below!
