The original late 2000’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy was one of the most uniquely atmospheric and genre defining first person shooters to release on the PC back in the day. With the recent 2024 launch of the highly anticipated S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, a great deal of new players have been introduced to the franchise, many of whom now seem interested in checking out the previous entries in the series.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone was a 2024 re-release of the original trilogy including Shadow of Chornobyl, Clear Sky, and Call of Prypiat, that ported the games to modern consoles to drum up hype and/or re-familiarize old school fans with the series before the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. The games however show their age with charming but dated graphics and audio but retain the tone and gameplay that fans of the original releases grew to love.

However, GSC Game World has announced that next week they will be releasing S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Enhanced Edition, which promises to remaster the games by updating the visuals and improve resolution and textures, essentially slapping on a fresh coat of paint to make the games more accessible for the more graphics sensitive fans and those who may have only found the series through the new sequel.
The best part is, much like the recent The Sinking City Remastered, they will be free to anyone that owns the original games. GSC Game World had teased in the past that they wanted to return to the original three games, while continuing to improve and update S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.

The new enhanced edition of the trilogy will come equipped with upscaled textures and far more detailed environments and 3D models for the characters, gear, and weapons. It will also add improved lighting through the implementation of global illumination, screen-space reflections, and godrays, as well as improved skyboxes and new water shaders to make the world feel more immersive and realistic to the players.
GSC Game World has confirmed that there will be full 4K resolution support, even for ultra-wide monitors, and that the enhanced edition will also ensure Steam Deck compatibility and integration with Steam Workshop for ease of access to cloud saves, controller support, and user mods.
With all of these upgrades and enhancements, now seems the best time for new players and old to jump into the world of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Enhanced Edition launches on Tuesday May 20th on Steam and modern consoles, and may be purchased separately for $19.99 a piece, or as the trilogy bundle for $39.99, or free for current owners of the original games.
