Top 10 Upcoming Horror & Thriller Games

Deathground is an upcoming solo and co-op survival horror game that drops players into dark and deadly environments filled with vicious dinosaurs that are out for blood. Utilizing stealth and combat mechanics to complete critical missions, Deathground presents a modern dinosaur horror experience that fans of classic titles in the genre like Dino Crisis and Jurassic Park are sure to enjoy. Whether in co-operative play or choosing to face the horror alone, players will be treated to a selection of weapons to fend off attacking dinos, as well as tools to use when completing objectives to insure their escape. The team at Jaw Drop Games have been working on this fan-funded project for half a decade to finely tune the gameplay mechanics and polish the audio and visuals using Unreal Engine 5 to produce a truly immersive and suspenseful fight for survival. If you are a fan of horror and dinosaurs, I think you’re probably going to like this one.

Mudang: Two Hearts is an upcoming near future third-person tactical stealth shooter and political thriller that takes place in South Korea around the events of a Korean unification between the North and South. A terror attack thrusts a North Korean special forces operator and a K-Pop idol together in an intertwining battle for survival, and a concerted effort to uncover the many cloaked conspiracies within the ranks of their governments. The game allows player freedom when making decisions throughout the narrative and provides a wide variety of close quarters combat skills, firearms, and gadgets to complete the task at hand. It looks like there will be a fair deal of both political intrigue and the horrors that come with uncovering deeply rooted corruption, as well as a biological terror element that appears to have created violent civilians in a way not unlike the homicidal homeless in Condemned: Criminal Origins. If a spooky Splinter Cell or a grimmer Ghost Recon seem up your alley, I think Mudang: Two Hearts should be on your radar.

End of Abyss is an upcoming action horror game that takes place in a mysterious and claustrophobic underground facility inhabited by twisted horrors both machine and monster, where nothing encountered is entirely human. While initially overwhelmed by the power and number of the enemies within, the player must adapt their skills and upgrade their gear and weapons to survive while navigating the branching paths and hidden areas found within the isolating depths of the complex. The player is provided with various tools like their scanner to detect important things in the environment, discover hidden paths, and progress to new areas as they grow in strength and ability. With deeply disturbing and imaginative enemy design, a dim and chilling atmosphere, and a fresh yet simplistic shooting/combat system, I think this is one you won’t want to miss. The game gives off Little Nightmares meets Signalis vibes, and I’m here for it.

Directive 8020 is the upcoming start of Supermassive’s The Dark Pictures Anthology season 2, making it the fifth game in the series and another of the many choice-driven narrative horror experiences from the studio. This time around, the game’s five playable characters make up the surviving crew of a colony spaceship called the Cassiopeia after it crash lands on a planet that’s twelve light-years from Earth. The scattered crew members have been brought out of hyper sleep early and must contend with an alien threat that is capable of mimicking the appearances of the other members of the crew. Using a multitude of tools to access new areas, defend the characters, and identify threats, the player or players must pay attention to not only their surroundings, but also the behavior of their allies. The game’s creative director described it as “The Thing in deep space”, so if you love the other Supermassive horror games like Until Dawn, The Casting of Frank Stone, The Quarry, any of The Dark Pictures Anthology titles, or are just a fan of space thrillers and/or deception based suspense, then this is one to keep an eye on.

Tormented Souls 2 is the upcoming sequel to 2021’s award-winning classic-style survival horror title Tormented Souls. The game features the return of series’ protagonist Caroline Walker. After surviving the nightmares and monstrosities of the Wildberger Hospital incident, Caroline is seeking a more peaceful and normal life until tragedy strikes yet again. Caroline’s sister Anna comes down with a mysterious affliction, and when conventional attempts to treat her are unsuccessful, Caroline must seek out an ancient supernatural cure. This search brings Caroline to a remote South American community that was created centuries ago by a religious order that refused to interact with the outside world. Much like the first entry in the series as well as the classic games that inspired it like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, Tormented Souls 2 will feature the exploration of haunting areas presented using a semi-fixed camera angle design, combat using firearms and melee weapons acquired from the surrounding environment, puzzle solving and item combinations, and a host of unsettling and murderous creatures to encounter. If you like classic survival horror games, this unique homage to the greats is sure to not disappoint.

Silent Hill f is an upcoming standalone sequel in one of the greatest psychological survival horror series in gaming. The game takes place in Japan in the 1960’s and follows a high school student named Hinako Shimizu, who must make her way through her town as it has been swallowed up by the all-too familiar fog from previous titles. The player must solve puzzles, fight grotesque and terrifying monsters, and run like Hell when the need arises. Konami felt the series was becoming too westernized, so they set it in Japan to give it a stronger Japanese identity, which is not only felt in the setting and atmosphere, but by the type of horror presented as well. Exploring the Japanese concept of “finding the terror in beauty” will bring the focus to the deeply unsettling feelings experienced when in the presence of immense loveliness and perfection. This uncanny unease will follow the character throughout the experience, while the player is treated to gorgeous and macabre visuals, an assuredly brilliant atmospheric soundtrack, and a carefully constructed story written by visual novel author Ryūkishi Zero-Nana, whom Konami believes will “really understand the essence of Japanese horror.” If you’re a fan of the Silent Hill series, Japanese horror, third person psychological thrillers, or frankly any creepy and convoluted gaming experiences, I would recommend that you put this one on your wishlist. I’m very excited to journey into the fog again.

The Sinking City 2 is another upcoming fan-funded sequel, this time to the gritty Lovecraftian psychological thriller called, you guessed it, The Sinking City. As with the previous title in the series, this entry will feature quite a lot of optional detective work similar to that of the developer’s long-running Sherlock Holmes game series. Apart from the superb sleuthing, the game will provide the player with plenty of combat rich environments to battle it out with all manner of Cthulhu mythos inspired monsters, using 1920’s firearms and melee weaponry to carefully defeat anything standing in their way. The Sinking City 2 will also have a leveling system to enhance skills and attributes allowing for customization of gameplay as the player progresses, as well as offering a selection of costumes and cosmetics to better tailor the experience to each player’s preferences. The dreary and dreadful flooded streets and dilapidated homes, hospitals, and hotels in this semi-open world survival detective thriller are waiting for fans of Eldritch nightmares, mystery solving, and poignant period pieces to come investigate. Are you ready to take the plunge into madness? I know I am.

Cronos: The New Dawn is an upcoming third-person action survival horror game from the devs of the recent Silent Hill 2 Remake as well as the Layers of Fear series. The story follows “the Traveler” who works for a mysterious organization known only as “the Collective”. The player will control the Traveler as they try and survive a futuristic wasteland as well as travel back in time to the 1980’s to rescue a specific selection of people who didn’t survive “the Change”, the world-shattering event that turned humans into horrible monsters known as “Orphans”. The game will feature of variety of guns and melee weapons that the player can use to dispatch the many terrifying and disgusting variations of Orphans while progressing through the crumbling world around them. If defeated enemies are not properly disposed of with the use of fire, they will merge with other undead corpses and return as a more powerful and challenging enemy, similar to the Crimson Head mechanic in Resident Evil Remake. With a combination of grim, gory, and gruesome environments, a modern third-person combat system that looks similar to the likes of Deadspace, and an equal parts gripping and disturbing plot to uncover, I think Cronos: The New Dawn will prove to be a sci-fi survival horror game that’s definitely worth checking out.

ILL is an upcoming first-person survival horror game being developed in Unreal Engine 5 that appears at first glance to be heavily inspired by the gameplay and atmosphere of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil 8: Village. The game takes place in an abandoned fort that has been taken over by a dark entity that has packed each dimly lit corridor with fleshy unpredictable monsters that are relentlessly seeking the player’s demise. ILL features realistic physics that allow for visceral mutilation and dismemberment, a binaural audio system to increase fear through immersion, and intelligent enemy design that promises the player’s actions will affect the behavior of the creatures they have to contend with. Along with all of that spooky goodness comes a unique weapon system that will have players installing modifications, checking for malfunctions, and maintaining their gear as they progress through the fort, adding an additional level of realism and immersion. As with similar games of the genre, ILL will also have a number of intricate puzzles to solve, items and weapons to collect, and an inventory to manage. If you enjoy the first-person Resident Evil titles and/or are looking for a truly dark and atmospheric survival horror shooter game, then this is certainly one to look forward to.

Resident Evil 9: Requiem is the highly anticipated upcoming entry in one of the most storied and beloved horror series in history. In classic Resident Evil fashion, players are introduced to a relative of a previous game’s protagonist, this time it’s FBI Analyst Grace Ashcroft, daughter of former Raccoon Press reporter Alyssa Ashcroft from the Resident Evil: Outbreak games. Grace is assigned to investigate a series of murders across the United States that involve the Wrenwood Hotel Case, the case her mother Alyssa was investigating before she was supposedly killed. The investigation seems to lead back to the remnants of Raccoon City, which was destroyed to stop the spread of the viral outbreak back in 1998 following the events of the original three games in the series. This sequel promises to be a far more horror-focused outing but with a larger scope and scale than previous games in the series, though with many of the games taking the characters on harrowing journeys around the world, I am curious to see just how large that scope is. If the trailer is anything to go on it seems as though the series is finally returning to its roots by taking the player through dark abandoned buildings filled with unimaginable biological monstrosities, a narrative focus grounded in a re-visitation of prior events from the series, and new mysterious antagonists with likely-evil intentions. Though it isn’t certain yet whether the game will be third-person, first-person, or perhaps a choice between the two, it is all-but certain that there will be plenty of monster killing, puzzle solving, and inventory management to keep even the most veteran of survival horror gamers enthused and engaged. This is my most anticipated horror title, and perhaps my most anticipated game at present, and I’m so eager to finally get my hands on it when it releases. If you like horror games… and I mean any horror games period, then you won’t want to miss Resident Evil 9: Requiem!

Little Nightmares 3 is an upcoming standalone sequel that takes place in the beautifully grotesque and isolating 2.5D universe that Tarsier Studios carefully crafted in the previous titles in the series, but this time Supermassive Games are taking the wheel on development. The game follows two new characters that embark on a desperate journey through a nightmarish and desolate realm called “the Nowhere” that can only be explored while asleep. The Nowhere, much like the varied settings of the previous titles, will be full of suspenseful and shocking encounters with hostile foes that far overpower the protagonists, leading to clever environmental puzzle solving and a reliance on patience and stealth to overcome the odds. This time the game will feature an online co-op mode that gives both players a useful role as each character will have their own unique weapons and gameplay mechanics, so if you are a fan of the series and/or looking for a quality co-operative horror experience, then look no further.
