I adore Warhammer, I have been playing the games and tabletop since I was a wee lad. I unfortunately do not have the time to play and paint my mini’s and my pile of shame is quite large. By the emperor, I am pleased to share with you my top 10 best Warhammer games to play!
10. Space Hulk Deathwing

A tactical FPS game hindered by lack of players. Exploring a decrepit Tyranid infested space hulk with only your squad of trusty Space Marines clad in Terminator armour. Plenty of claustrophobia and dakka dakka action found here. I really thought this one would have drawn in Left 4 dead Players, I was sadly wrong.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Hulk – Deathwing – A 2016 tactical FPS set in a claustrophobic Space Hulk. The Enhanced Edition fixed many launch issues, delivering solid Termie action.
Where to buy: Steam and PS store.
9. Fire Warrior

The Tau cometh.
Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior – A flawed but ambitious PS2-era FPS, starring a Tau Fire Warrior in a gritty campaign. This game was considered flawed but for me I loved it. At the time, never have I seen such an exploration into the 3D world of Warhammer 40K. Fighting the imperium of man and the forces of Chaos up close and personal was beyond amazing. Canonically though, a Tau would not stand a chance against an Astarte’s one on one in melee combat. Let alone hundreds lol.
Where to buy: Physical Ps2 copies or GOG.
8. Boltgun

Fan of retro shooters and DOOM? Well this is the game for you!
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun – Retro FPS fun, fast and faithful, a bloody tribute to 90s shooters. It is truly a blast to play from start to finish. One of my favourite pieces is the ability to shout iconic one liners with the press of a button. Gory, fun and chaotic, a must play for any Warhammer fan.
Where to buy: Available on all stores.
7. Chaos Gate Daemonhunters

The warriors of the Inquisition are yours to command. My god this game is awesome! It was an instant buy for me as the Grey Knights are my favourite army, it was a no brainer! I loved it so much I bought it on Steam and Xbox. Each Grey Knight is a physical and physic powerhouse. Build your squad and take on the heretics. Its got a solid campaign and is a ton of fun to play.
Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters – Tactical brilliance with Grey Knights purging the warp in XCOM-esque glory.
Where to buy: Available on all stores.
6. Rogue Trader

Looking for a Baldurs Gate version of Warhammer 40K? Well, here you are. Rogue Trader is widely praised for its immersive experience in the grim, expansive Warhammer 40K universe. Your choices genuinely effect the narrative as a whole. While it can suffer from minor FPS drops, I encourage any warhammer fan to try it. You will get sucked into the story.
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader – A 2023 CRPG from Owlcat Games, offering deep role-playing as an Inquisitor’s agent exploring the galaxy. It’s slow-paced but rich in lore and choice.
Where to buy: Available on all stores and also on Xbox Game Pass.
5. Space Marine

The game that started it for many newcomers to the lore of Warhammer 40K. The animations and sound effects really emphasized the weight and power of a Space Marine. It was the videogame equivalent of the Astartes fan animation. At the time, it was some of the best environmental designs for a 40k game. Actor Mark Strong was truly amazing as Lieutenant Titus. Solid shooting, amazing campaign, gory and such a variety in enemies. We love you Space Marine! Leandros… You still suck.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine – The OG third-person carnage-fest, a fan-favorite bloodbath.
Where to buy: Xbox 360 and Ps3 physical editions. Digital version available on Steam.
4. Inquisitor Martyr

Fan of Diablo? Well then, this game is for you. This one actually flew under my radar. I randomly discovered it on sale and bought it instantly. I could not put it down for weeks. I loved everything about it, from the combat to the storyline. The one liner quips from your created inquisitor had me giggling constantly. The environments were also really cool to explore and there was a huge variety of worlds to bring the hammer of the emperor down on.
Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr – ARPG goodness with Inquisition flavor, grinding gear in the Emperor’s name.
Where to buy: Available on all stores.
3. Dawn Of War 2

A bold step away from the original game. But to my surprise, a truly amazing one. Gone was the base building of the OG, instead the sequel focused on deep RPG elements and tactical squad focused gameplay mechanics. It really had some incredible enemy AI, always having you think about your strategies and using your squads to the best of their abilities. It was darn pretty to look at too!
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – Squad-focused tactics and RPG depth redefine the franchise.
Where to buy: Steam.
2. Space Marine 2

A visual spectacle from start to finish. Utter 40K eye candy and the definitive Warhammer game. This game was made by fans, for the fans and without a doubt one of the best looking games of last year. The return of Titus was a most welcomed one. Unfortunately Mark Strong did not make a return. But Vikings Clive Standen does and apt job. Combat, amazing! Story, amazing! Co-op, amazing! Multiplayer, utter blast to play! A little on the short side but that’s okay. A real homage to games of the 360 and ps3 era. Packed full of fun! It also delivered the coolest last stand in gaming!
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 – Relentless action, jaw-dropping visuals, and pure Space Marine power.
Where to buy: Available on all stores.
1. Dawn Of War + all DLC’S

“Walk softly and carry a big gun”.
The greatest RTS of all time in my opinion. This game is perfect and was also my first foray into a Warhammer 40K game. Dawn Of War cemented my love and obsession with the franchise. It is a perfect introduction for any newbie and delivers on all fronts. I cannot stress how much I love this game. Relic did such an amazing job here, along with its dlc sequels. Winter Assualt, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm are all simply amazing. With each one, new units and armies are introduced and each single one are spectacular! I play this game multiple times a year. We are introduced to a brand new Chapter of Space Marines, the Blood Ravens. A relic obsessed chapter of some of the finest soldiers of the imperium. Gabriel Angelos remains a fan favourite to this day.
I sorely miss LAN parties playing this game. A feeling I try to chase even today!
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – The definitive 40K RTS, blending brutal combat with strategic genius—a timeless classic.
Where to buy: Steam
