Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor Review – A Relaxing Train Adventure Full of Nostalgia

A Perfect Entry Point Into Rail Sim Games

I’ll admit something right away: Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor was my first real experience with a rail simulator. I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but the beautiful and relaxing announcement trailer immediately caught my attention.

After spending time with the game, I can confidently say this: I’m now a fan of rail sim games.

There’s something incredibly calming about slowly exploring the world of Sodor, and developer Dovetail Games has done a fantastic job making the experience approachable even for newcomers to the genre.

Learning the Rails

For players unfamiliar with train simulators, the controls can take a little getting used to at first. Managing speed, braking, and camera controls isn’t immediately second nature if you’ve never played a rail sim before.

Thankfully, once everything clicks, the gameplay becomes quite straightforward.

The tutorial, however, did give me some trouble. I encountered a glitch where the game asked me to switch to free camera mode but wouldn’t let me progress afterward. After restarting the game twice, I was able to continue normally.

It’s a small hiccup, but worth mentioning.

Pure Relaxation on the Isle of Sodor

Once things get going, Wonders of Sodor becomes exactly what I hoped it would be: pure relaxation.

There are plenty of missions and challenges to complete, but the mode I kept returning to was Free Play. Simply exploring the beautifully recreated Isle of Sodor was easily my favorite part of the experience.

You can choose from a variety of characters, but naturally my go-to was Thomas the Tank Engine.

Driving through the island’s landscapes at your own pace creates a surprisingly peaceful experience that’s hard to put down.

A Fantastic Photo Mode

One feature I ended up using far more than I expected was the photo mode.

The world of Sodor is full of charming scenery, colorful environments, and classic characters that look great in motion. The photo mode lets you capture those moments perfectly, and I made great use of it during my time with the game. Whether it was Thomas rolling through the countryside or scenic shots of the island itself, it’s a fantastic addition that players who enjoy virtual photography will appreciate.

A Nostalgia Trip for Longtime Fans

As someone who grew up watching Thomas & Friends, the nostalgia hit almost immediately.

The moment the classic theme started playing on the main menu, I was flooded with childhood memories. I genuinely had a huge smile on my face.

The game is also fully voiced, which adds another layer of charm and authenticity for longtime fans of the series.

Simple Gameplay, But That’s the Point

From a gameplay perspective, things remain fairly basic. But honestly, I don’t think that’s a negative here.

This isn’t meant to be a hyper-complex simulation. Instead, the game focuses on creating a relaxing, welcoming experience that players of all ages can enjoy.

And for me, it absolutely succeeded. I found myself completely relaxed and enjoying every minute of my time on Sodor.

Final Verdict

Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor is a charming and relaxing rail adventure that perfectly captures the spirit of the beloved series.

While a few small tutorial glitches popped up early on, the overall experience is peaceful, nostalgic, and surprisingly addictive. It’s the kind of game I can easily see myself returning to whenever I need a break from more intense titles.

And who knows — it might even turn a few non-rail sim players into fans, just like it did for me.
