Sony & Bandai Namco Team Up to Ignite Anime & Manga Fandom

Sony and Bandai Namco have formed a professional alliance in what seems to be a strategic move to grasp fans of anime and manga! The two giants agreed upon a deal worth 68 billion yen (equivalent to $463 million). This deal sees Sony acquire 16 million shares of Bandai Namco, or roughly about 2.5% of the company. Which might not seem like a lot, but it is for Sony.

In a recent statement, it was revealed that the main focus of the deal will be to expand “the fan community for IP such as anime and manga around the world”. This tells me that Sony is openly wanting to pursue new avenues of growth in which to create new adventures for their fan base. For me, it’s not a bad move considering Sony controls a huge player market within Asia, especially in countries like Japan and China.

With Sony identifying that there is a potential for rapid market growth within the anime and manga community, they are taking full advantage of this fact, and realistically, you can’t blame them with Microsoft taking over many studios of Western origin. Sony are looking to stick to their stronger market and are actively identifying where they can extend their reach. However, in the statement that has been proposed, the future does indeed look bright, so I will explain the bulk of it as briefly as I can.

A business alliance was formed between Bandai Namco and Sony, two of the leading Japanese entertainment companies, with Sony investing in Bandai Namco. The partnership will be implementing IPs within the community of fans who are keen to see more anime and manga experiences globally. The market in which there is expected market growth is going to see Sony draw on their strengths to create these emotional experiences and really maximize their efforts to increase the value of said IPs.

As we know, the two companies have historically collaborated before, in music, games and anime. Now they are planning to broaden their range in which they can implement profitable initiatives, which include the expansion of prior projects, as well as products and services based on IP developed by Bandai Namco, which further leans into Sony’s strength in the production and distribution of anime and other content, as well as merchandising.

Overall, we can see that they mean business and really want to capitalize within the anime and manga space, and along with this forecasted success, they also want to explore opportunities to support creators by jointly developing and operating entertainment-related technologies and services. Furthermore, they seek to engage in joint investments and business alliances to target areas of fan engagement. Because of this strategy, it tells me that they will accepting fan feedback and further supporting what the community want from the studios involved.

Bandai Namco’s EVP, Nobuhiko Momoi, said, “We are filled with excitement about the potential to create new entertainment.” Sony Group’s Chief Strategy Officer, Toshimoto Mitomo stated, “We will further accelerate our efforts to maximize IP value and realize Sony’s long-term vision.” This further highlights that both companies are doubling down on these targeted markets. I am excited to see this partnership blossom and, hopefully, we get to see not only gripping IPs but also true depth and brilliance from them both.

What do you guys think? Are you excited about the partnership? furthermore, are you excited to see what can be produced from them both? Let us know in the comments below.
