With PlayStation Plus set to celebrate its 15th anniversary later this month with the service launching in late June 2010! At the start, Sony began giving out free games monthly for the PS3 and at later dates, they included the PS Vita, and as the years rolled on, the PS4 and PS5 got in on the action. Sony, as we know have basically phased things out and focused on releasing titles for the PS4 and PS5 (duh), but as of January 2026, PS4 games are going to become like gold dust as Sony looks to shift its focus towards the release of more PS5 titles on the subscription service, which in my opinion should work in their favor.
This has all come from PlayStation Vice president of global services Nick Maguire, as he spoke with Stephen Tolio during a relatively recent interview. Maguire also mentioned during this interview that PlayStation has “no plans” to offer first-party titles as day-one releases to PS Plus members, and with this being a prominent talking point at the moment with subscribers and onlookers alike, it’s hard to overlook the subject.

PlayStation choosing not to release day-one first-party titles onto the subscription service may be the biggest thing holding PS Plus back from accessing its untapped potential. However, PS Plus has been surpassing expectations as of late following comments from Nick Maguire. This news follows how the service has been somewhat following Xbox’s lead with their model… and sort of not.
Nick Maguire said, “It’s really given us a new way to reach the audiences with these games, and it’s given new value to partners to find new people to play their titles. And just the engagement we see from it is really positive, in terms of the number of people choosing that catalogue and coming back month after month”. After this, Maguire went on to encourage Sony to keep investing in the service to “bring more value to users”.
Going back to the topic of first-party titles, I think that this is the one major difference between Xbox and PlayStation. Yes, PlayStation is indeed taking a similar approach to Xbox, though they remain steadfast in not releasing new titles onto the subscription service, akin to how Xbox releases first-party titles onto their Game Pass service. I do believe if PlayStation explored that possibility then they would see the influx of users that Maguire is hoping for, but again, until that possibility is explored and the theory is tested, I believe that Xbox may maintain a slight edge over PlayStation.

Do you think PS Plus has untapped potential? Do they simply fall into the shadow of Game Pass? Let us know what you think in the comments below or over on the Discord!
