New James Bond: 007 Movie in the Works | The Honor Goes to the Director of Dune and Sicario

With a reinvigorated buzz steadily growing around the franchise due to the recent announcement of the new video game adaptation, the timing couldn’t have been much better to make this announcement. Denis Villeneuve, the visionary director of such hit films as Sicario, Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Prisoners to name a few, has been trusted with the honor of continuing the legacy of Ian Fleming‘s 007. This project will mark the first James Bond film from Amazon MGM Studios, with Villeneuve also serving as executive producer alongside Tanya Lapointe, with David Heyman and Amy Pascal producing on the film as well.

The 007 franchise is one of the most highly coveted properties in the industry for filmmakers, with other well-known directors like Wonka‘s Paul King, Conclave‘s Edward Berger, and the mastermind behind the “Cornetto Trilogy” of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End, Edgar Wright supposedly having taken meetings about their potential handling of the film.

The desperately sought-after privilege was, however, granted to Villeneuve in the end. When announcing the undertaking, he spoke candidly about what the franchise means to him, saying:

“Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.”

Amy Pascal and David Heyman shared their feelings as well, stating:

“Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy. It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it’s ours, too. We are lucky to be in the hands of this extraordinary filmmaker.”

It seems as though this pairing of creatives might just be the right fit for the future of the franchise, but will we see a continuation of the high-octane action from the most recent entries, or a return to the silver-tongued master of espionage akin to some of the Bonds from the earlier films? I suppose all of that will depend on the director’s vision, whomever they tap to write the screenplay, and of course who they cast to play the iconic roles.

Even Mike Hopkins, the head of Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video said:

“James Bond is in the hands of one of today’s greatest filmmakers.”

This upcoming entry will be the franchise’s 28th title (though that has been a subject of debate surrounding the “official” films) and a follow-up to 2021’s No Time to Die. How Villeneuve is going to continue the story after the events of the last movie is beyond me, but perhaps there will be a dramatic shift for the narrative.

My biggest point of intrigue at present is, WHO IS GOING TO PLAY BOND?! Many have speculated for years about the possibility of actors like Idris Elba, Henry Cavill, Tom Hardy, Richard Madden, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson among others, and with the importance of the franchise to the filmmakers who direct them, imagine the excited bunch of actors lining up to audition for the potentially career defining role.

It’s currently unclear when the next James Bond film will begin its production, but the studio is currently seeking a screenwriter who will do justice to the franchise and work closely with Villeneuve to bring his vision for the beloved secret agent to life. The last movie Villeneuve directed was the critically and commercially successful Dune: Part 2, earning over $700 million at the box office and a nomination for Best Picture. With Villeneuve’s current focus being the production of Dune: Part 3, it is unlikely that we will be seeing the debonair agent with a license to kill, any time soon.

Are you excited for a new 007 film? Do you think Villeneuve is the man for the job? Who do you believe should play James Bond in the upcoming film? Let us know over on the Discord!
