Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Still A Galaxy Far Far Away!

In a post on RestEra, a discussion about Polish developer CD Projekt Red’s upcoming The Witcher 4 not releasing until 2027 at the earliest, brought on Jason Schreier from Bloomberg to comment that this is also the same for Naughty Dog’s next title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

We saw our first glimpse of Jordan and Naughty Dog’s latest title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, back in 2024 at the Game Awards. Which also just so happens to be the same time we saw CD Projekts Red’s The Witcher 4 revealed.  Of which, appear to be still years away from release. Naughty Dog’s last title, The Last Of Us Part ll, was in development for 6 years. When it comes to Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Naughty Dog started development in 2020. If the game doesn’t release until 2027, at the earliest, we’ll be close to a 7-possibly 8-year development cycle for the galaxy hoping adventure.

The last game to take 8 years of development at PlayStation was….Concord….ya, I didn’t want to, but here I am. Now, obviously, these are two completely different games, let alone two completely different studios, one of which doesn’t even exist anymore. BUT, 7 or 8 years of development is millions upon millions of dollars. Something our industry continues to struggle with, game development costs. Will Naughty Dog and PlayStation be able to recoup their expenses back if Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet takes that long to develop?

I understand, take as much time as you need. We only want the best game possible. However, is that truly feasible in today’s climate? Or, is it time to speed up production and just make smaller games? Let us know what you think of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet not being released until 2027 or later.
