Nintendo recently said that getting Mario Kart World to work on Switch 1 was a “tough situation”, which is great considering the new game will be optimized and full of bright colors ready for Switch 2. However, the original idea was for the game to appear on Switch 1 before transitioning to Switch 2 development in 2020.
During part of Nintendo’s Ask the Developer interview, Kenta Sato said, “When we were developing for the Nintendo Switch system, it was difficult for us to incorporate everything we wanted, so we were always aware of what we were giving up in return”. He further explained. “We discussed things like toning down the visuals, lowering the resolution, and we even considered dropping the frame rate to 30 fps in some cases. It was a tough situation”.

The initial development of Mario Kart World started around the time when Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released on Nintendo Switch and, as we now know, the decision to move it for development for the switch 2 was decided upon in 2020. This gives us a pretty clear idea of what sort of game we could be expecting from the company over at Nintendo.
With the dawn of a new Switch era, Mario Kart World looks to be a launch game for the system and this recent interview gives us an insight into why they decided to move the game to the Switch 2 development, as they needed to cater it to a next-generation system. All in all, it is a good move for Nintendo as opting for less isn’t always more.
