Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree – A New Spellbinding Soulsvania Masterpiece

Every so often, a game comes along that grabs you by the heart and refuses to let go.

Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree is a breathtaking blend of dark fantasy, addictive gameplay, and jaw-dropping presentation that has me utterly hooked. As someone who typically wraps up a review and moves on to the next adventure, I find myself returning to this game night after night, lost in its haunting world. It’s a rare gem that earns a perfect 10/10, and I’m thrilled to share why it’s so special. Developed by Primal Game Studio and published by Knights Peak.

From the moment you boot up Mandragora, you’re plunged into the grim, enchanting world of Faelduum, a land teetering on the edge of ruin. The game’s soulsvania roots shine through, blending the punishing yet rewarding combat of a Soulslike with the exploration-driven joy of a Metroidvania. But what sets it apart is its deep ARPG flair, particularly the expansive skill tree that feels like a love letter to games like Path of Exile. You start by choosing one of six distinct classes, each with unique starting skills and stats, and from there, the customization is nothing short of phenomenal. Whether you’re crafting a flame-wielding mage, a dagger-dancing assassin, or a hybrid tank, the interconnected talent trees let you mix and match abilities to create a character that feels uniquely yours. The freedom to experiment, coupled with easy respeccing, makes every level-up feel like a thrilling opportunity to refine your playstyle.

Combat is where Mandragora truly sings. It’s precise, responsive, and downright addictive, with a satisfying rhythm of dodging, striking, and unleashing powerful abilities. The stamina-based mechanics keep you on your toes, while the addition of traversal skills like a grappling hook and double jump opens up the world in ways that feel fresh and exhilarating. Whether you’re swinging across chasms or rolling behind a hulking boss for a critical strike, the movement and combat flow together seamlessly. For newcomers to the soulsvania genre, the adjustable difficulty sliders for enemy health and damage output are a godsend, letting you tailor the challenge to your skill level without sacrificing the game’s core intensity. It’s an accessibility touch that makes Mandragora welcoming to all players, from seasoned veterans to curious first-timers.

The presentation is nothing short of stunning. The world of Faelduum is a visual feast, with painterly backdrops that evoke the haunting beauty of a decaying realm. From misty forests to crumbling gothic spires, every environment is drenched in atmosphere, with exquisite lighting that casts eerie shadows and warm glows in equal measure. The art direction feels like a nod to The Witcher series, with its rich, lore-heavy world and morally complex narrative, but Mandragora carves out its own identity with a distinct, almost hand-drawn aesthetic. During dialogue, the game’s magnificent animated character portraits, rendered in a lush, oil-painting style, bring every conversation to life. These moments are elevated by the stellar voice acting, which is a standout feature. Every character, from grizzled commanders to mysterious witches, is fully voiced with masterful performances that add depth and personality to the world. For a game of this scope, a fully voiced cast is a rare and impressive feat, and it pays off in spades.

The musical score, composed by the Christos Antoniou (known for his work with Septicflesh), is an absolute triumph. Each boss battle has its own unique theme, with high-energy tracks that amplify the tension, while quieter moments in the game’s hubs are underscored by melodies that linger long after you’ve put down the controller. Antoniou’s work is a perfect match for Mandragora’s dark fantasy tone, elevating every moment into something truly epic.

Clocking in at around 40 hours for a standard playthrough (with plenty more for completionists thanks to New Game Plus and side content), Mandragora offers a substantial journey that never feels padded. The story, while not revolutionary, is engaging and steeped in Witcher-esque vibes, with moral choices and a cast of eccentric characters that keep you invested. The interconnected world is a joy to explore, filled with hidden paths, optional bosses, and secrets that reward curiosity. I am still stumbling on unexplored areas!

I can’t recommend Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree enough. It’s a game that blends the best of soulsvania and ARPG mechanics with a presentation that’s as gorgeous as it is immersive. The customization, combat, and traversal are endlessly captivating, and the voice acting, animated portraits, and musical score elevate it to a level few games reach. I’m not just reviewing this game, I’m living in its world, and I don’t want to leave. If you’re looking for a dark fantasy adventure that will consume your heart and soul, Mandragora is an absolute must-play.
