Karma: The Dark World Review – A Haunting Walking Sim with a Gripping Story

Karma: The Dark World is a chilling first-person psychological thriller that immerses you in a dystopian nightmare. Developed by Pollard Studio and published by the wonderful Wired Productions, this walking simulator delivers an unforgettable 7-10 hour experience with phenomenal voice acting and an atmosphere that’s second to none. However, early access technical issues hold it back from true greatness.

A Mesmerizing Atmosphere That Pulls You In

From the moment you step into Karma: The Dark World’s alternate 1984 East Germany, the game’s atmosphere grabs you and doesn’t let go. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the visuals are stunning, with oppressive corporate offices and surreal memory sequences. The sound design, think eerie whispers, flickering monitors, and a haunting soundtrack, creates a choking sense of dread. It’s one of the most immersive worlds I’ve explored in a game, making every moment feel like you’re being watched. I honestly kept getting reminded of the movie ‘Event Horizon’ in many parts of the game and I loved that!

Phenomenal Voice Acting Brings the Story to Life

The voice acting in Karma is nothing short of exceptional. Jack Ayres as protagonist Daniel McGovern and Mark Desebrock as Sean Mehndez deliver raw, emotional performances that ground even the game’s most bizarre moments. Whether it’s despair, fear, or defiance, every line hits hard, pulling you deeper into the narrative. This level of vocal talent elevates the entire experience, making it a standout in the genre.

A Confusing Yet Captivating Story

The story of Karma: The Dark World is a wild, mind-bending ride. You play as Daniel, a Roam Agent diving into suspects’ minds to uncover secrets, only to get caught in a web of conspiracy and fractured memories. The non-linear narrative, packed with cryptic symbolism, is utterly confusing at times, think piecing together a puzzle with half the pieces missing. But it’s this very mystery that keeps you hooked. Every twist, no matter how baffling, drags you deeper into the game’s world. If you love stories that make you think and interpret, this one’s a gem.

Walking Sim Gameplay Done Right

As a walking simulator, Karma focuses on exploration and light puzzle-solving, with no combat. You’ll wander through haunting environments, uncover clues, and tackle puzzles that range from clever to occasionally too simple. The deliberate pacing and slow movement speed (even “sprinting” feels like a stroll) enhance the dreamlike vibe but may not click for players craving action. Still, the 7-10 hour runtime feels just right, delivering a tight, focused experience.

Early Access Technical Woes

Sadly, the early access build I played had its share of technical issues. Stutters during gameplay and cutscenes broke immersion more than once, and graphical glitches, especially with unreadable or glitchy in-game notice boards, were more frequent than I would have liked. These problems took from the otherwise stellar presentation. Here’s hoping the day-one patch smooths things out, as these issues are the biggest barrier to Karma reaching its full potential.

Final Verdict: A Must-Play with Some Caveats

Karma: The Dark World is a bold, unsettling walking simulator that’s as intriguing as it is disorienting. Its phenomenal voice acting, unmatched atmosphere, and gripping (if confusing) story make it a standout for fans of narrative-driven horror. The 7-10 hour length keeps things concise, but early access stutters and graphical issues hold it back. If you’re drawn to psychological thrillers and can forgive some technical roughness, Karma is a journey worth taking. A day-one patch could elevate this game even further.

Score: 8/10
