CD Projekt Red has officially green lit and started pre-production of the long-awaited sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. Formerly known as Project Orion from CD Projekt Red, they have now plugged in the floodlights to be shone onto the name of the sequel, which is now currently known as Cyberpunk 2!
The studio made the announcement following its latest financial results, where it was also said that the Phantom Liberty DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 hit a whopping 10 million copies sold. However, what we do know following the financial results is that 96 out of 730 developers at CD are currently now working on Cyberpunk 2. It was also added that 422 developers are working on The Witcher 4, which is now in full motion.

A statement in the results as follows: “Several weeks ago, the CD Projekt Red team responsible for the next big game set in the Cyberpunk universe completed the project’s conceptual phase.” As continues, “As a result, Cyberpunk 2 – previously known as Project Orion, has progressed to pre-production”. Now for your information, pre-production can mean anything from making sure the concepts are on point, and it can be right up to planning full production and building prototypes to work with, so essentially this part can take years to complete. Lesson in motion: Please don’t rush the release of this one guys!
Following the financial results, an investor call was made and the Co-CEO of CD Projekt Red, Michal Nowakowski, responded to the potential release window of the next instalment sitting around late 2030 or 2031. Nowakowski didn’t rule that out when he spoke. “I can reiterate in a way what I said in one of the previous calls, which was basically that our journey from pre-production to final release takes four to five years on average”, Nowakowski said, so with that Cyberpunk 2 sounds a way off, but we now have the name for our upcoming sequel!
Regarding what we know about the title so far (which is, admittedly, not too much), the game’s vibe is giving a Chicago gone wrong style environment with less of the Blade Runner vibes, however we can expect to see new cyberware in the upcoming title, suggesting to me the team are already fleshing out new concepts of what to add and what not to add to the next title.
So as we hit the wall at the end of our article, let us know what you think in the comments below! Do you think that Cyberpunk 2 will be a solid release? Or do you think that it could have its flaws like its older brother?
