Crystal Dynamics The Team Behind Tomb Raider Hit With Layoffs

The team, known for the Tomb Raider series and is currently working on the next installment of the franchise, has been hit with layoffs. Something we hear far too often these days.

Crystal Dynamics revealed on X that the decision was made to layoff 17 of their staff.

“Crystal Dynamics made the difficult decision to reduce our workforce by 17 talented team members. We did not make this decision lightly. Ultimately, this step was necessary to better align our current business needs and the studio’s future success. It is not a reflection of the dedication or ability of those affected.

We recognize how painful this outcome is for those impacted and we are supporting them with transition packages and opportunity outreach.

Crystal Dynamics remains committed to pushing the boundaries of making great games. This change does not alter our current project plans.”

Crystal Dynamics is under “Embracer Group”, which leaves one to question if the layoffs came from them with more restructuring being done? How can one forget the massive fumble of Embracer Group. 30-year-old studios being shut down and a massive “restructuring plan” set in motion that made many sick to their stomach at the thought of what Embracer had done with all of their teams.

Back in December 2022, it was revealed that Amazon would be publishing the next Tomb Raider game and that development on the next installment of the franchise was going well. We have yet to see anything about the new Tomb Raider game. Maybe we’ll see a reveal at Summer Game Fest? Let’s not forget that Crystal Dynamics is also working with Xbox and The Initiative on Perfect Dark. There are at least two projects the team is working on. And yet, it’s still not enough as we continue to see layoffs across the industry.

Will the layoffs ever stop in the video game industry?
