Cronos: The New Dawn Review – A Masterpiece in Survival Horror with Time Travel, Epic Combat, and Unforgettable Atmosphere

Overview

Cronos: The New Dawn is a triumph in the survival horror genre, blending the eerie atmosphere of Silent Hill with the grotesque, claustrophobic dread of Dead Space. Bloober Team, known for their polarizing approach to gameplay mechanics, has struck gold with this title, delivering one of the most engaging and terrifying experiences in recent memory. It’s not just a game; it’s an unsettling journey through time, filled with puzzles, grotesque enemies, and a narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Here’s why Cronos: The New Dawn deserves its spot in the survival horror hall of fame.

A Thrilling Setting – A World on the Brink

Set in a sprawling, decaying city of New Dawn. Cronos: The New Dawn is as much a survival horror as it is a time-bending thriller. The game’s setting is hauntingly atmospheric, reminiscent of Silent Hill 2’s nightmarish environments, something Bloober Team has been refining since their work on that title. The use of time travel isn’t just a narrative gimmick, it’s embedded into the gameplay and world-building, creating an experience that’s both immersive and mind-bending.

Time Travel at Its Best

One of the standout features of Cronos: The New Dawn is its brilliant integration of time travel. It’s not just a story device – it’s an integral part of your journey. The objective to hunt down essences for your phylactery becomes integral for not just the main story but for fleshing out important choices later on. These essences grant you essential bonuses like extra damage and increased energy, creating an addictive loop of exploration and combat.

Much like The Medium (another Bloober game), Cronos plays with dualities and shifting realities, but this time the time travel element introduces a complex layer to the gameplay.

Combat – From Skepticism to Joy

Many, including myself, had doubts about Bloober Team’s ability to nail combat after the lackluster action in The Medium. While The Medium had its strong points, the combat was universally panned for being clunky and uninspired. Cronos: The New Dawn, however, is a completely different beast. The combat is satisfying and well-balanced, with a variety of weapons that bring real joy to battle. From the starting pistol (which I personally adored) to the more exotic weapons like the Arbalest, which gives off serious DOOM BFG vibes, the combat is tactical and just plain fun. A ton of more weapons can found throughout the game.

Exploration – A Key to Survival

In Cronos: The New Dawn, exploration isn’t just encouraged, it’s essential. With massive levels full of hidden paths, secret areas, exploration is at the heart of the experience. The game does a fantastic job of rewarding you for being thorough, especially when it comes to finding upgrade items, essences, and new weapons. The old adage of “take the road less traveled by” has never felt more relevant, as paths that seem insignificant at first may unlock some of the game’s most critical elements.
However, this also means that Cronos is a game you can easily miss a lot of, especially in the early stages. If you find two paths, take the less obvious one. It might just lead to your next weapon upgrade or a much-needed supply of crafting items.

Unlocking New Paths with Gravity Boots

The Gravity Boots in Cronos: The New Dawn are a earlyish upgrade that completely change how you navigate the world. Once equipped, they allow the Traveller to walk on special gravity plates, including walls and ceilings, by reorienting gravity toward those surfaces. This opens up a fresh dimension of traversal, letting players move across areas that were previously inaccessible. The boots also interact with gravity jump panels, which can launch you across large gaps or between platforms. This mechanic adds depth to exploration and puzzle solving, as you must figure out how to use gravity paths and surfaces creatively to progress. It also enhances the game’s atmosphere, giving you a unique perspective of derelict environments from walls or upside-down vantage points, amplifying both the immersion and strategic possibilities of the level design. These are also incredibly used in the final boss battle.

Enemies – The Orphan HorrorEnemies – The Orphan Horror

The Orphan enemies are an absolute nightmare, both in their unpredictability and their sheer brutality. These grotesque, mutated figures can vary in difficulty – some are pushovers, while others can grow exponentially stronger by consuming their fallen comrades. As they devour other Orphans, they become faster, tougher, and more lethal. This forces you to think strategically, especially when dealing with a group of Orphans who may be quietly strengthening behind the scenes. The risk-reward system here is something to note. Enemies that have consumed become incredibly stronger with thicker armour and health. Sometimes, you must make the decision, take out the weaker enemies or go for the strongest. These split decisions can mean life or death, I have had to redo some areas more than once.

Fire-based tools like the pyre and the torch are invaluable, both for burning enemies and for preventing them from fusing together. It’s a tactical advantage that adds a whole new layer to combat, giving you the option to set up mines or create choke points. The strategic use of fire, especially in tight corridors, is an essential part of survival. You must manage your torch and pyres well!

The Warden and the Train Station Hub

As you progress through Cronos, you’ll eventually meet a key character called the Warden. The Warden, who acts as a guide and ally, introduces you to an area within the game that becomes a central hub: the train station. This train station is a safe haven where you can rest, plan your next move, and gear up for the horrors ahead. It’s a fantastic way to break up the tension and give you a breather before diving back into the terrifying unknown.

The Traveller’s Awakening: From Emotionless Wanderer to Empowered Hero

The Traveller, the enigmatic protagonist of The New Dawn, starts her journey as a figure shrouded in detachment, almost robotic in her actions and interactions. With an air of cold efficiency and a heart locked away. As the narrative unfolds, cracks begin to form in her stoic exterior. Forced to confront the weight of her past, the darkness of her decisions, and the complexity of human emotions, the Traveller slowly discovers the depth of her own humanity. Through hardship, loss, and personal revelation, she evolves from a solitary wanderer into a character brimming with empathy, strength, and resolve. As the game progressed she became an amazing character that I hope to see again.

The Final Boss – A Heart-Stopping Battle

No survival horror game would be complete without an unforgettable final boss, and Cronos: The New Dawn delivers in spades. The final boss battle is epic, challenging, and absolutely exhilarating. The atmosphere is tense, the stakes are high, and the payoff is worth every moment of struggle. It’s one of the best survival horror finales in years, reminding us just how thrilling a climactic battle can be when done right and puts many other games to shame in this regard.

The Downsides – Inventory Management and Dodging

While Cronos excels in many areas, it’s not without its flaws. The inventory management system, in particular, is clunky and frustrating. Key items and upgrades take up valuable space that you may need for weapons or healing items. This leads to unnecessary backtracking, and even after upgrading your inventory, you’re still left feeling cramped. I found myself spending hours running back and forth to retrieve essential tools, like the bolt cutter, simply because I couldn’t fit it in my inventory. It’s a minor gripe, but it’s one that detracts from the overall experience. A doge mechanic would be very welcome but is not completely necessary.\

Conclusion – A Must-Play for Survival Horror Fans

Cronos: The New Dawn is a fantastic addition to the survival horror genre, standing tall as one of the best in recent memory. With its engaging time travel mechanic, atmospheric world, fun and tactical combat, and rewarding exploration, it’s a game that’s easy to recommend to any horror fan. The flaws in inventory management and the dodge mechanic are small bumps on an otherwise smooth road. Bloober Team has truly outdone themselves, delivering a terrifying and thrilling journey that will leave players on the edge of their seats.

If you love survival horror games that keep you thinking and leave you trembling, Cronos: The New Dawn is an absolute must-play.
