Black Panther Game Canceled | What Will This Mean for the Marvel Game Deal?

Back in 2023, EA confirmed development of a Black Panther game, but the details on the game were few and far between and mostly kept internal with no official gameplay ever shown to the public.

All that was ever truly revealed was that it would be a single-player, third-person, Marvel game. Black Panther was to be part of a three-game deal between Marvel and EA that was meant to also include an Iron Man game and another unannounced title.

According to Rebekah Valentine from IGN, EA Entertainment’s president Laura Miele sent out a companywide memo announcing to staff that the upcoming Black Panther game would be canceled, and Cliffhanger Studios who were working on the project will be shut down.

“These decisions are hard,” Miele explained in the memo. “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”

Miele also stated that the decision was made to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”

EA refused to reveal how many people were being laid off due to the cancellation of the game and subsequent studio closure. Valentine indicated that the people let go were fewer than 300 since April, but couldn’t confirm an exact number. The staff cuts affected both the central and mobile teams, and EA is attempting to find new positions for some of these employees elsewhere within the company.

Around 2,300 jobs that we are aware of have been lost due to layoffs since the start of 2025, with EA’s third bunch of layoffs this year, the number is expected to be closer to 2,500+ in the very near future.

What will this mean for the company and what will it mean for the Marvel game deal? Marvel has yet to officially comment on the cancellation or its impact on this deal.
