Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster – A New Beautifully Dark Journey Worth Rediscovering

A Hidden Gem Finally Found

This was my first time diving into the world of Anima: Gate of Memories and its sequel, The Nameless Chronicles, and I’m honestly surprised I missed these games the first time around. Developed by Anima Project, a small Spanish studio, both titles offer something rare: a mix of fast-paced combat, deep lore, and an atmosphere drenched in mystery and melancholy. Now brought together in this Remastered Collection, it’s the perfect time to experience them.

A Tale of Two Stories

The first game, Gate of Memories, puts you in the role of The Bearer of Calamities and her enigmatic companion, Ergo Mundus. It’s a story of light and darkness, loyalty, and the heavy burden of destiny — told through striking visuals and cryptic writing. The sequel, The Nameless Chronicles, shifts focus to the antihero himself, delving into his tragic past in a surprisingly emotional and philosophical narrative.

Each story stands on its own yet intertwines elegantly, offering two perspectives on the same world and lore. Expect about 20 hours for the first game and around 15–18 hours for the sequel, depending on how much you explore and engage in optional battles.

Combat That Shines Bright

The combat is where Anima truly excels. It’s fluid, stylish, and surprisingly complex for a smaller-scale action RPG. The ability to switch characters mid-battle, chain combos, and master enemy patterns keeps every encounter engaging. There’s a satisfying rhythm to combat, it rewards precision and timing rather than simple button-mashing.

While the camera can occasionally feel clunky, the remaster smooths out performance and visuals, allowing the game’s art design to stand out even more. The gothic architecture and painterly environments have aged gracefully, and the remastered edition highlights their moody charm.

A Remaster Worth Experiencing

Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster feels like an underrated treasure from the 7th gen of consoles, finally given the polish and visibility it deserves. The writing is poetic, the combat dynamic, and the world fascinatingly strange. Even with its indie quirks, it’s an unforgettable ride for fans of soulslike action RPGs or narrative-driven fantasy.

If, like me, you’re discovering Anima for the first time, prepare to be captivated — and maybe even haunted, by its beauty and sorrow.

Final Verdict 8/10
