Is Dual Front Still Rainbow 6 Siege?

Ubisoft recently gave fans a look towards the future of Rainbow 6 Siege with their R6S X Showcase. Fans saw a look into the future of siege and what’s next for the tactical wall-fortifying shooter. Ubisoft wants to keep their live service shooter moving forward, pushing the boundaries of gameplay, graphical fidelity and directional audio that will elevate the future of the game that we’ve been playing for 10 years!

How do they plan to keep Rainbow 6 Siege X going for another 10 years? One of their plans is to introduce new game modes and, to start it all off, there will be their newest and permanent game mode, Dual Front.

I’ve played several hours of the newest addition coming to Rainbow 6 Siege 6 X on June 10th. Dual Front, the new game mode, features a 6v6 player count with a mix of operators to overcome the opposing team. Will you look to stay back and defend? Or would you rather go on the offensive and try your luck to overcome the opposing team and take control of one of their sectors?

Does the new game mode still feel like Siege of the past?

YES, and NO! Ubisoft needs to expand if they want to generate new fans of the game. Dual Front will help in doing just that, while giving older fans like myself something new and fresh to play besides their tired and true game mode, Bomb. Fans of old, like me, will have the familiar touch of Bomb, a game mode that places one team on defense trying to keep control of 2 bomb sites. All the while, the opposing attacking team tries to overcome the odds of the defensive team and plant the defuser. The attacking team wins the round by planting the defuser and holding the point while the defuser slowly counts down, defusing the bomb, or by eliminating the other. The defensive team wins by holding off the attackers for a duration of time, or by eliminating the other team.

Dual Front takes from the traditional Bomb game mode and well…speeds things up with a twist. Each team starts on either side of a much larger map. We have the same symmetrical map, BUT, our goal is to take over one of the opposing teams’ sections by planting a defuser (see where the bomb mode comes into play) on the map and other objectives. Another objective, placed in the neutral zone that will feature as an “assignment” Ubisoft plans to rotate in new assignments regularly. This time, our assignment was to grab the hostage, in this case, Dokkaebi, and take her to safety all the while, the opposing team is fighting to do the same. Bring Dokkaebi to safety, and your team is rewarded a point. The first team to win over 3 points wins.

It sounds fun, fresh, new and exciting. For some it is; for others, it’s not Siege. Rainbow 6 Siege is slow, methodical, tactical and all about getting the angle just right for the pixel peak on the opposing enemy.  Dual Front is most of those things but sped up by 5. It’s a much faster experience, one that takes away from the past Siege experience and to what I feel is something between if Call of Duty and Siege had a baby. Learning a new map is exciting. Finding the right angle to hold on defense while you hear your opponent just on the other side of the wall heading your way for a timely shotgun blast is a thrill. Going from one sector to another, to an outdoor setting and back in again is where it begins to feel more like Call of Duty. It’s running in-between sectors, getting shot in the back from a rotation you didn’t see coming because you don’t have 2 bomb sites to hold down. You have the map to hold down instead. This might become off-putting to some players that are more familiar with the current state of Siege and don’t want to deal with the fast-paced confusion of Dual Front.

I personally enjoyed the new game mode. It’s much prettier with Ubisoft updating with visuals, the marble floor sparkles while you can now truly see the grain within the wooden planks. The directional audio was outstanding, hearing every step sounds unique depending on what surface you are walking on. However, the constant on-the-run movement didn’t quite feel like the Siege I’m used to. Siege is a much slower game, but Ubisoft is looking to speed things up a bit. That’s okay though. I’m looking forward to June 10th and to see all the feedback from players alike. Team communication is always key. Dual Front is a prime example of proper team communication. Who is going to attack, and who wants to stay back to help defend your side from the opposing team? These are things you will need to communicate out on the field. Everyone has a headset. It all depends on if everyone decides to use them will make the difference of a win, or a loss.
