A Game That Completely Caught Me Off Guard
Dave the Diver wasn’t what I expected at all, and that’s precisely why I ended up totally in love with it. At first glance, it looks like a charming indie title with a quirky hook. After spending time with it, though, it quickly reveals itself as a thoughtfully crafted experience packed with humour, warmth, and far more depth than its lighthearted presentation suggests.

Mini-Games That Come Together Beautifully
At its core, Dave the Diver is built around a collection of mini-games that blend seamlessly into one addictive loop. By day, you dive into the mysterious Blue Hole, catching fish, discovering secrets, and carefully managing oxygen and resources. By night, you’re running a bustling sushi restaurant, prepping dishes, serving customers, upgrading your menu, and improving efficiency.
Each system is enjoyable on its own, but the real magic is how naturally they feed into each other. The fish you catch directly impact your restaurant’s success, creating a satisfying sense of continuity and purpose that keeps you coming back for “just one more dive.”

Full of Heart, Humor, and Personality
One of the game’s biggest strengths is its personality. The humor consistently lands without feeling forced, and the cast of characters you meet along the way is genuinely memorable. Dave the Diver never takes itself too seriously, yet it still manages to deliver moments that feel heartfelt and sincere. There’s a warmth to the storytelling that elevates the experience beyond simple mechanics.

Relaxing, Yet Surprisingly Deep
Despite its laid-back atmosphere, there’s a surprising amount of depth here. Weapon upgrades, equipment customization, staff management, and progression systems all add layers without overwhelming the player. It strikes an impressive balance: engaging enough to stay interesting, but never stressful.
Most importantly, Dave the Diver is incredibly relaxing. It’s the kind of game you can unwind with after a long day, easy to sink into, calming to play, and endlessly entertaining even when you’re not fully “locked in.”

Post-Launch Support and Minor Drawbacks
I’m especially excited to check out the free Godzilla DLC. It feels like a perfectly on-brand crossover—unexpected, playful, and a great sign of continued support for the game.
My only real criticism, and the reason it lands at a 9/10 instead of a perfect score, is the loading times. They’re a bit longer than expected, especially for a game of this scope running on Xbox Series X. It’s a small issue, but noticeable.

Final Verdict
Dave the Diver is funny, relaxing, and quietly brilliant. It’s a game full of charm, depth, and heart—one of those rare surprises that sticks with you long after you put the controller down.
