Blood West Review – A New Wild Horror-Western Worth Your Time

Developed by Hyperstrange and published by New Blood Interactive

Strong Shooting & Immersive Western Horror

Blood West delivers on its promise of tight, satisfying shooting mechanics. The gunplay is solid, revolvers, rifles, shotguns, even magical or cursed weapons feel weighty and impactful. Coupled with stealth options and a perk-based progression system, the combat and exploration combine in ways that echo classic shooters while giving the player freedom to choose a stealthy or guns-blazing approach.

Nostalgic RPG-Style Inventory & World Design

If you, like me, ever loved older RPGs such as Morrowind, Blood West’s inventory management and resource-scavenging scratched that itch. The game encourages exploration, looting, and strategy finding bandages, potions, artifacts, and magical relics, then deciding what to carry. This old-school sense of self-reliance and resource balance brings a lot of charm, making the horror-Western blend feel like something unique.

Atmosphere, Art Style & Horror Vibes

The horror-western aesthetic, cursed lands, monsters roaming a haunted frontier, dark occult undertones is handled really well. The art style and world-building evoke a twisted, supernatural Wild West, which brought back fond memories of horror Westerns like Undead Nightmare. The atmosphere is one of the game’s biggest strengths.

Rough Edges & Difficulty Spikes

That said and this is noticeable from the start, Blood West can feel a bit clunky until you get used to the controls and gameplay flow. The pacing is uneven, and enemies, especially monsters, can hit quickly and hard. The difficulty can sneak-attack you when you least expect it, giving the game an almost “souls-like” tension at times. For players unprepared or used to more forgiving games, that learning curve might be off-putting.

Story & Overall Feel

The narrative is solid but not the game’s main appeal. The story does enough to keep you moving through the three main scenarios and horror-filled maps, but it’s really the gameplay loop, combat, scavenging, surviving, and atmosphere that stand out. The experience overall feels like a well-crafted throwback with a modern horror twist.

Final Verdict: 8/10

Blood West gives you a wild, spooky, immersive Wild West horror experience that strongly recalls older RPGs and classic shooters. With thoughtful resource management, satisfying gunplay, and a haunting art style, it’s easy to lose yourself in the cursed frontier. Once you adjust to the controls and mindset, Blood West becomes a memorable ride, even if it isn’t perfect.
