New Perfect Dark Reboot Concepts Released After Cancellation Chaos

After years of being stuck in development hell, it was brought to light that the Perfect Dark Reboot was going to be shelved, alongside the studio developing the troubled title – The Initiative. This all came about after some major changes at Xbox which featured layoffs and studio shutdowns, with majorly anticipated titles also being put to bed, like Rare’s Everwild and Avalanche Studios‘ co-op game contraband

Within the news of the cancellation though, came some gritty details about the 2024 gameplay trailer being “fake” and not a true representation of the final game. However, a level designer who worked on the title later stated that the trailer did contain some “fake stuff”, but the footage itself was from a genuinely playable demo.

With this news triggering a lot of curiosity about what was going on behind the scenes and if there ever was a solid game to believe in, mp1st found some documents that offered an insight into Perfect Dark’s vision for the future, which also included gameplay, aesthetics and some never-released pictures. The information came from several screenshots of internal documents which were shared by the former developer. The content which was contained within dated back to a period of time which is close to the game shuttering earlier this year and opened the door to core concepts, which also revealed several planned gameplay systems alongside some screenshots featuring concept art.

The documents open by identifying an opportunity to capture the market for the whole secret agent genre. The team behind the game had a genuine belief that there was a gap in the market due to the absence of espionage franchises such as Metal Gear Solid and 007, both of which are now making a comeback! Does anyone which we got a sequel or even a remake of the espionage game Saboteur by Pandemic and EA, because that game had unique ideas that made it a banger!

Alongside this being in the documents that the team eyed a gap in the market, the documents also revealed that until around April of this year that The Initiative was working on the title Vertical Slice 1. Within game development, this term refers to playable proof-of-concept that shows a roundabout feel of the final game’s overall quality and feel. It was also mentioned that this vertical slice 1 belonged to “season 1”, which could all but confirm that previous reports that claimed the game was releasing in an episode format were true.

Moving away from feel and quality, the document also mentioned gameplay, and within that was mentioned there were several concept systems, such as the Relentless System and a specific Reward System. However, one was only discussed in depth. The one discussed in depth was the Adrenaline System, which would have treated adrenaline as a valuable resource which the character would’ve gained over time and granted access to a wide variety of abilities. These would have included the ability to heal, increase damage or reduce incoming damage. By the looks of things, we also looked to have been getting bullet time. The ability to slow time and dodge bullets, aim with precision and increase movement speed, and kill enemies would have extended this unique ability.

If you pay close attention to one of the images within a document, you’d of noticed that you could see the MC Joanna Dark, with messier hair and a more frustrated expression. This points to the fact that the adrenaline system would have physically changed Joanna’s appearance alongside giving her special abilities. The gallery also included other concept art for locations appearing in the first season, showing places like Cairo – a city which was seen in the gameplay trailer – alongside other futuristic settings. Documents referred to the aesthetic as “Eco Sci-Fi”, which combined futuristic design with sustainable, green environments, reminding us of the real world we live in.

It’s such a shame that we saw the end of this great franchise reboot getting shelved as there was real work being poured into the design and the overall feel of the game. That made to feel worse as it was reported by Bloomberg that Take-Two was in talks with Microsoft and Embracer Group to finance the game. However, negotiations fell through which all but put the Perfect Dark Reboot to rest, leaving yet another Microsoft franchise gathering dust in the dark.
