Borderlands 4, a game that we must hear news about now weekly as Randy Pitchford takes the internet by storm with his… “interesting” opinions and antics. However, this time, he may have really just said his most outrageous piece yet. Releasing on September 12th, 2025, the next entry into what has become an increasingly controversial franchise is said to be the most ambitious version of Borderlands yet. You’d think that would hype people up, but the fans are going… mild?
With the consensus being that this will be the most ambitious open world yet for a game in this franchise with over a bazillion guns being available and more choices to make than someone walking down a street in Amsterdam, Borderlands 4 isn’t hitting with fans of the series at all. As we heard from our friends at Insider Gaming, they got to sit down with Pitchford at Gamescom, and what he had to say was, well, pretty bold.
As CEO and direct creator of the franchise, Pitchford has seen more changes to the Borderlands formula than anyone else. However, with Borderlands 3 not quite hitting the same as the past two did, it left fans searching for more, and in the end, left them with a hollow shell of a once enjoyable series. The third entry into the otherwise awesome franchise saw itself become a laughingstock for fans, and the very same fans questioned the future of the critically acclaimed series.

Pitchford made bold claims in his chat with Insider Gaming, as he said, “we’re just now beginning to dig into what our post-launch is, and we’ve got some extremely exciting plans that I cannot wait to share and talk about.”
Randy Continued to share his excitement by saying “we’re now expert at making Borderlands 4, and when you’re making a game, you kind of figure out how to make it as you ship it. That’s one of the reasons why our post-launch content tends to be so good.” Now were hitting the doubtful part, as at the end of his chat, he claimed “we will break 100 million units with this launch, easy, all in with the franchise.”
THERE it is, there’s a buffer, not 100 million for this game, as Borderlands 3 hit just 22 million sales, and they’re expecting a minimum of 8 million sales to hike the whole franchise up to 100 million. Now don’t get me wrong, that is impressive, BUT when you have games out there that are shipping millions upon millions from a single game, it kind of makes this look lackluster.

Of course, I believe with time the game will rack up their expected sales assuming they don’t absolutely botch the whole thing. However, a lot of fans are snubbing this title before even giving it a chance based on Pitchford and the previous release.
Now, I don’t blame the fans actually, as many fans have been loyal to this franchise since the very beginning and giving it chance after chance, but after some recent flops, those same fans are losing hope for the game to produce excitement as each recent entry seems to lack more quality than the last. Borderlands 4, however, is promising to be a blockbuster hit, and with how Borderlands 3 didn’t quite reach the stars that I had hoped, I’m unsure myself.

Pitchford has spent the last 20 years of his life cradling the life of Borderlands and pushing it to the masses who have come back time after time. With each entry becoming more and more energetic and, in your face, is it standing the test of time? Is it time for our dear old Randy to move on? Who knows, here’s hoping Borderlands 4 hits as well as 1 and 2 did. However, I won’t hold a candle for this as I’ve been burnt before. With bold words being spoken every time Pitchford seems to grab a mic, I’m hoping this will be the biggest and most explosive game yet. However, for now, we will see.

Are you guys excited? I know it’s kind of subjective, but we can at least expect a much better game than Borderlands 3 at the very least, right? With the promise of the next entry featuring a more quality open world, I’m expecting it to be better than the last outing for the franchise, but until that’s made certain, I’ll remain cautiously optimistic. As always, stay frosty guys, as we hold out hope for the franchise!
