Xbox Console Update | Play Anywhere Filter Coming to Consoles and More!

An Xbox “Play Anywhere” filter is coming to console game libraries very soon! The feature is currently being tested by members of the Xbox Insider program in a newly released update that provides the ability for players to filter their games based on titles that currently support the Xbox Play Anywhere program, which feature cross-buying and cross-progression across Xbox consoles and Windows PC, with upcoming compatible devices like the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X and the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition surely to be announced in the coming months.

If you aren’t currently familiar with the initiative, the Xbox Play Anywhere program allows gamers to play their purchased titles on both Xbox series X|S consoles and Windows PCs, and the new filter will allow for ease of access through advanced organizational systems coming to the platforms’ game libraries.

This upcoming feature is one more step in Microsoft’s shift towards expanding the Xbox gaming ecosystem and enhancing player experience by allowing them the freedom to choose where they play their purchased games, while continuing to provide updates and quality of life improvements in an effort to retain current fans as well as broadening their current audience.

Games that are part of this program will only need to be purchased once, and then the purchaser will be able to play those games on their Xbox consoles and PCs. Achievements, in-game saves and progress, and all other pertinent data will sync across the player’s devices through utilization of Xbox’s cloud gaming system. This will allow for seamless transitioning between one device to another, without pesky upload times getting in the way of hopping back into a game.

I for one believe that players will likely make extensive use of this upcoming filter, as it will make deciding on which games to purchase and play much easier for fans of cross-platform gaming. Though in recent years it felt as though Xbox’s nearly decade old cloud-based program was being underutilized and barely marketed, which felt strange to many optimistic fans who were eager to see it mature into its fullest capabilities, 2025 has become the biggest year for Xbox Play Anywhere integration since its initial inception!

Xbox Play Anywhere has become one of the biggest focuses for the company as of late, and with the upcoming release of the Rog Xbox Ally handheld gaming devices that are meant to natively run PC games already, this ecosystem that Xbox and Microsoft are determined to nurture is clearly going to grow exponentially. They continue to market the service more than ever before with statements like this:

“With over 1,000 games now supporting Xbox Play Anywhere, players can seamlessly switch between PC, Xbox console, and supported handhelds at no additional cost, bringing even more value to our Xbox players. Progress including saves, game add-ons, and achievements, is carried over wherever the game is played. Simply log in with an Xbox account on any device to continue playing from where you left off.”

The number of games with Xbox Play Anywhere functionality has been growing tremendously in recent months as well. With all of the announcements about new gaming tech, major industry partnerships, and a true restructuring for the brand and its various departments, it seems as though the list will only grow more rapidly from here on out. This year in particular has been a rather busy time for the program, with Xbox revealing:

“100+ games have been released with this feature so far in 2025! In May, these games came into the Xbox Play Anywhere collection:”

  • 30 Birds
  • Alexandria IV
  • Astro Miner
  • Black Pieces Move First
  • Boxing Gym Story
  • Bridge Race
  • Crazy Chicken Kart 2
  • CyberCorp
  • DOOM: The Dark Ages
  • Dream Town Island
  • Dungeon Village 2
  • Elemental War Clash
  • Eyes: The Horror Game
  • Fuga: Melodies of Steel 3
  • Golf Up
  • Helix Jump
  • Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge 4
  • Kittens and Yarn
  • Kulebra and the Souls of Limbo
  • Monster Train 2
  • Preserve
  • Retro Classics
  • Shy Cats Hidden Tracks – Vol. 2
  • Splitgate 2
  • Spot Challenge Vol. 4
  • Starlight Legacy
  • Super Engine GT Turbo SPEC
  • The Pyraplex
  • to a T
  • Trident’s Tale

Those were only the games added in May this year! June has already seen a handful of additions to the program with major titles like Final Fantasy XVI, FBC: Firebreak, Space Marine Master Crafted, and The Alters, among a few others. As I stated before, this trend is clearly indicating that the pattern of probability in regard to future titles being made compatible with the program is incredibly likely, as the program’s use and popularity continue to grow with each passing day.

With Xbox’s significant layoffs, in what appears to many as a restructuring attempt to refocus its departments on the best ways to utilize the program in synergy with their upcoming first-party games and hardware, there are concerns certainly being raised, but based on all of my research and pouring through the data and statistics, I’m leaning towards this being the best move for the beloved brand in the current technological landscape. Their new mission seems to be as follows:

“At Xbox, our vision is for you to play the games you want, with the people you want, anywhere you want.”

Though many of the titles currently featured on Xbox Play Anywhere are lower budget indie games that unfortunately don’t get the attention many of them deserve, the program still boasts over 1,300 currently compatible titles. If the company continues to drive focus and resources to the program, adding consistent updates, day-one first-party releases, and an even larger library of attention-grabbing triple-A titles, then I think this thing will really have legs.

During the Xbox Games Showcase it was revealed that a select few featured games would be getting the Xbox Play Anywhere support treatment including titles like the highly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong as well as the massively popular and critically acclaimed fantasy RPG Baldur’s Gate 3. They went on to state during the showcase:

“Every new game you see in today’s show will be playable on the Xbox Ally [through Xbox Play Anywhere].”

As a longtime fan, user, and supporter of the Xbox brand, I’m personally excited and admittedly a tad nervous about the direction Xbox is headed. I am confident in many members of their team, though some of the current leaders in executive roles leave something to be desired when it comes to the careful handling of the legacy and longevity of the company.

I just hope we keep getting quality games and devices to play them on for the foreseeable future. Surely that’s not too much to ask. Sound good?
