10. Ninja Gaiden 4
Ninja Gaiden 4 is the upcoming long-awaited return of the fast paced action-adventure hack-and-slash series thirteen years in the making. This sequel takes place years after the previous entry in the series and will introduce a new protagonist named Yakumo, a versatile fighter who must set out on a quest to save Tokyo from dark and twisted foes that bring nothing but chaos and destruction. Yakumo has multiple frenetic fighting styles that will allow for some fluid and stylized combos that are sure to lead to some fun over-the-top encounters with various monsters, cybernetic soldiers, and anything else that stands in his way. Ninja Gaiden 4 will also mark the return of series favorite Ryu Hayabusa, showcasing modernized updates to his classic fighting styles with all the bloody dismemberment and flashy weapons the series is known for, as Yakumo and Ryu’s fates intertwine as they seek to destroy an ancient curse and save the world. If you’re a fan of the series or hack-and-slash games in general, this modern approach to the formula will be an instant hit!

9. Code Vein 2
Code Vein 2 is the upcoming second entry in the anime vampire Dark Souls inspired series Code Vein. This sequel takes place in the same society where humans and vampires (Revenants, as the game calls them) live together in relative harmony. Some Revenants have been turned into mindless killing machines referred to as “Horrors”, and with the help of a mysterious girl named Lou, the player will travel through time to hunt these Revenants in an attempt to stop the collapse of the world as they know it. The game will feature updates to many of the things that made the original so fun including the highly customizable character appearances, weapons, gear, and abilities, as well as the strategic third person combat that requires both patience and skill to master. Code Vein 2 promises to challenge the player’s adaptability in order to survive the many monstrous threats they will encounter, and will feature a new combat mechanic that allows players to drain enemies of their blood to steal their skills for themselves. If you’re a fan of the previous entry, Souls-like games, or anime action-adventure titles, then this is one you won’t want to miss.

8. The Outerworlds 2
The Outerworlds 2 is the upcoming sequel to the semi-open world, humorous and irreverent, futuristic first-person sci-fi fantasy roleplaying game The Outerworlds. This sequel follows the player’s custom character, an Earth Directorate agent who sets out to uncover the source of a bunch of cataclysmic rifts that have been opening, causing havoc, and have the potential to destroy all of humanity if not promptly addressed. Every player’s experience will vary, as the game will feature a great deal of customization options that go beyond simple appearance preferences, of which these include skills and abilities to upgrade, weapons and gear to modify, dialogue choices and actions that will impact the story, and relationships with companions that will help shape the type of character the player prefers and the world they inhabit. The game will be packed with tons of exciting first-person gunfights and melee skirmishes, loads of NPCs to interact with, unique items and areas to discover, and a whole mess of quests to undertake. If you’re a fan of first-person sci-fi roleplaying games like Fallout: New Vegas or Starfield, or if you liked the first game, then this one will surely be right up your alley.

7. The Blood of Dawnwalker
The Blood of Dawnwalker is an upcoming third-person open-world vampire fantasy action-adventure RPG. The player takes control of Coen, a man who is human by day and is free to engage in social activities, pursue romantic interests, and engage in combat encounters, but by night he becomes a powerful vampire with a host of supernatural abilities and an important quest to complete. The game will take place over the course of a thirty-day cycle in which the player must rescue Coen’s family or defeat his vampiric creator. Exploration of the world itself does not advance the time clock however, but completing quests and certain interactions does. Similar to the time management system in games like Persona 5 and Metaphor Refantazio, the developers have indicated that the player will always receive a notification when an action will move the time clock ahead and by how much it will advance as the player explores and interacts with the medieval Europe-inspired world that has now fallen under the rule of vampires. Coen acts as a sort of medieval fantasy version of Marvel’s Blade, seeking revenge and justice against those that have harmed him and the people he holds dear. If you’re a fan of third-person action-adventure RPGs, dark gothic fantasy, or vampire games in general, I think this will be one you’ll want to sink your teeth into.

6. Persona 4 Revival
Persona 4 Revival is the upcoming total remake of the wildly popular turn-based JRPG that released nearly twenty years ago. In the style of the previous series’ remake Persona 3 Reload and the critically acclaimed sequel Persona 5, P4R will feature updated graphics, modern controls, improved combat and social interactions, as well as a host of exciting new surprises to be discovered when it releases. The story follows a high school transfer student who moves to a rural town in Japan to live with his police detective uncle and his younger cousin, in what initially appears to be a relatively peaceful new start for the protagonist. Unfortunately the town has become home to a string of grisly and mysterious muders that only seem to occur on foggy days. As the story unfolds, the player will make many new friends and allies that will aid in uncovering the mysteries of the town and their connection to a bizarre TV world called the “Midnight Channel”. As the name implies the player will utilize the power of their personas as well as lead their investigation team through dangerous dungeons filled with constantly evolving combat encounters, engage in school and social interactions, and embark on a journey of personal growth and the confrontation of their inner demons. If you like the other games in the series or are a JRPG fan looking for an anime inspired dramatic comedy combat game, then definitely take the time to check this one out.

5. Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the next upcoming entry in the storied samurai monster slaying series Onimusha. The last mainline title released nearly twenty years ago, so fans are eager to get their hands on this modern update to the beloved series. The protagonist looks to be a fictionalized version of famed artist, strategist, and most importantly for the context of the game, master swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. This sequel seems to be a mix of challenging monster boss battles, fast-paced swordplay, clever strategics, and an aesthetic akin to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The combat seems varied, but also seems to draw a fair bit of inspiration from Souls-like games, showcasing the importance of precision parrying, striking, and evasion. The older games in the series always looked and felt like a lot like the classic Resident Evil games but from the perspective of various swordsmen set in ancient Japan, and I’m hopeful that this game will carry the same feeling but with all of the gorgeous visuals and gameplay updates that modern engines can offer. If you’re a fan of samurai action titles, monster fighting games, horror themed fantasy worlds, or Souls-likes, then I can almost guarantee you’ll like Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

4. The Witcher 4
The Witcher 4 is the upcoming fourth mainline game in the high fantasy, monster hunting, roleplaying world of The Witcher series. Though the first three games mostly focused around the many dark, shocking, and sometimes hilarious adventures of the witcher Geralt of Rivia, it seems as though this time around players will control Geralt’s protege Ciri who has now taken on the role of witcher herself. The game will take place in the same dark fantasy world from the previous entries where monsters, magic, and many adventures are found. Using a fast-paced and responsive third-person sword fighting and magic wielding system, The Witcher 4 will have the player facing off against all manner of threat, both human and otherwise. With new mythical beasts to battle, new lands to explore, and a mysterious quest to undertake, this is shaping up to be one of my most anticipated RPG releases at present. If the previous games are anything to go on, there will be a ton of opportunity to grow the protagonist by customizing their appearance, weapons, and fighting style, as well as developing them through dialogue choices and actions the player takes along the way. If you’re a fan of open-world fantasy RPGs or the other games in the series, don’t sleep on this one. It looks like it’s going to be the long-awaited triumphant return that many fans of the series are going to love, whether they themselves realize that yet or not.

3. Stranger than Heaven
Stranger than Heaven is an upcoming Japanese crime-focused period piece from the creators of the Like a Dragon/Yakuza series and its numerous spinoffs. Taking place in Japan during 1915 and 1943 (presumably as different characters), what little we know is that the player will take control of a blue-eyed Japanese man fluent in both English and Japanese, with little knowledge of his heritage. With such a wild variation in combat styles from this studio, having made some games featuring third-person fast-paced beat em’ up style martial arts, while others utilized a turn-based JRPG type of combat, it’s yet to be known exactly what players are in for. If the trailer and previous games are any indication, it seems likely that the game is leaning more towards a third-person over the shoulder style of combat that will involve player choices to decide how enemies and encounters are handled. If it’s like all of the other games from this studio, it’s going to be mostly open world with an absolutely overwhelming but utterly rewarding amount of quests, mini games, NPCs to meet, and a load of silly and wacky encounters that defy reality, all interlaced with a deeply moving and dramatic main narrative that will take your breath away. I have been saying ever since they released the samurai-era Like a Dragon: Ishin spinoff, that they should do a forties organized crime game, and sure enough I got my wish. If you enjoy the other games from this studio, as they are all formatted nearly the same, or if you just want a fun forties combat and exploration action-adventure RPG, then I’d say this is one you should definitely give a try when it releases. I know I’ll be playing.

2. Clockwork Revolution
Clockwork Revolution is an upcoming first-person steampunk roleplaying game set in a Victorian-era-inspired city full of industrial advancements in robotic technologies and weaponry. The player will take on the role of their own custom character complete with their preference of appearance, stats, abilities, and a fighting style that best suits their needs. With a heavy focus on weapon and character modification as well as a branching narrative based on dialogue options and the player’s actions throughout the story, the game seems as though it will lend itself to a tremendous amount of replayability. Everything we’ve seen so far seems to indicate that the game will play like a more modern combination of Fallout, Bioshock, and Singularity but with a British humor and sensibility that reminds me of the Fable series. The story involves time travel, and implements it in such a way that allows the player the ability to manipulate time to traverse the city during exploration, turn the tide of combat encounters by rewinding and/or slowing things down to strategically dispatch enemies, and much more. The player will use their weapons, wits, and time altering abilities in an attempt to eliminate the imposed class divide and literally change history, perhaps more than a few times. With crisp graphics, smooth animations, an imaginative and inspired narrative, and an emphasis on player freedom, I think this is going to be something special that any first-person RPG fans should add to their wishlist. I’ve been very exciting for this one since its initial reveal, and after the recent showcase I am positive that I’m going to enjoy it immensely.

1. The Elder Scrolls 6
The Elder Scrolls 6 is… well, if you aren’t at least somewhat familiar with the series yet, I can’t help you. This eagerly awaited sequel has been the topic of discussion in the fantasy roleplaying game community for over seven years now since its original announcement. After the massive critical and commercial success of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, the devs have been hard at work… on a bunch of other games. However frustrating that may be for fans of the series, the studio has assured the the fan-base that the game is currently being developed and has been for some time now. The series takes place on the medieval fantasy continent of Tamriel in a world brimming with magical creatures, a massive selection of weapons, clothing, armor, and a lore so deep you can’t help but drown in it. The bulk of the games are typically spent ignoring the main quest of saving the world from an evil demon or dragon or whatever other powerful universe-crushing foe they chose that time around, and instead doing whatever your heart desires. After creating the custom character from a collection of creative races/species, you can live out your perfect fantasy adventure by diving into dozens of expertly crafted dungeons in search of loot, joining and eventually running guilds that allow you to hone your combat prowess, sharpen your thievery skills, bolster your magical aptitude, and even give in to your murderous inclinations. In The Elder Scrolls there is always something new to do, whether it’s crafting, enchanting, and improving gear and weapons, buying/building and decorating a player home, perhaps starting a family, taking a break to fish or hunt and scavenge for meat and alchemical ingredients to cook meals and brew potions; The list goes on.
Do you want to do ridiculous side quests for mischievous Daedric lords in exchange for their unique and powerful rewards? Perhaps you’d prefer joining up with a clan of warriors and defending the land from a variety of threatening attackers, or perhaps you would prefer to be the threat they face. Maybe you’re more the stealthy type and just want to steal everything that isn’t bolted down, and then fence the goods to raise your stats in mercantile until they’re high enough to invest in a shop so you can retire with a passive income. All of this and SO much more is possible in The Elder Scrolls series, and with little known about the upcoming sequel, we are only left to speculate based on the evidence provided by industry insiders and the teasers that the studio has revealed. The Elder Scrolls 6 will likely take place in the mountainous desert lands of Hammerfell, the home of the Redguards, with a possible inclusion of the bordering emerald landscape of High Rock. If the studio follows through with the recent trends from their other games like Starfield and even Fallout 4, they will likely include a building mechanic for either homes, ships, or maybe even a player run town complete with quest-giving NPCs, various shops, and even an inn. What we do know is that the game will give players the choice of third-person and first-person camera perspectives, an insane amount of player agency and character customization, a deep narrative filled with fascinating quests and characters, and lots of magical, mystical, mythical things to swing a sword at. Regardless of where it takes place or when the game releases, it is sure to be a treat for returning fans of the series and new fans of fantasy RPGs alike. This is one that nobody should miss out on.

Bonus Game! Echoes of the End
Echoes of the End is an upcoming third-person Unreal Engine 5 cinematic action-adventure title that focuses on the story of Ryn, a character known as a “Vestige” who wields unpredictable and dangerous magical abilities. The of Ryn’s journey is to rescue her brother from an empire torn asunder by war and on the verge of total annihilation. Throughout Ryn’s travels she will be accompanied by Abram Finley, an educated scholar haunted by ghosts, whose kinship will prove more than beneficial in uncovering a great conspiracy that could hurl the land into chaos. Abram is not simply a supporting character in the story, but he also plays a vital role in combat, puzzle solving, and the discovery of secret items and locations within the world. The game is set to take place over the course of ten richly cinematic chapters filled with important choices that will influence the adaptive narrative and add to the evolutionary dynamics between the main characters by exploring the concepts of trust, sacrifice, and redemption. Echoes of the End will feature fast-paced sword fighting and powerful magical abilities when fighting off adversaries both human and monster, with stand-out boss battles peppered in to challenge the player’s strategy and skill. The game will also feature environmental puzzles that will take advantage of Ryn’s talents in illusion, gravity manipulation, and her ability to reshape elements of the world to progress past obstacles that stand in the way of her purpose. Set in a fantasy world that draws most of its inspiration from the breathtaking scenery of Iceland, players can expect to explore icy ruins, sunken cities, holy battlegrounds, volcanic landscapes, and more. Echoes of the End looks fairly similar in gameplay to the newest God of War entries, but with its own unique approach to exploration and world building that seems interesting enough to keep an eye on for now.
