Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been out for about a month now and Ubisoft has released their plans for the future of the game including many new patches, title updates, added gameplay features, and expansions, but if you want to learn everything there is to know about that you’ll need to click here. I’m not here to talk about what they have told us, so much as what they aren’t telling us. The word on the street is that there is a strong possibility that AC Shadows will be getting a PVP multiplayer mode at some point going forward, which hasn’t been featured in an Assassin’s Creed title since 2013’s AC Black Flag.

Last year it was reported that there would likely be a post-launch multiplayer mode of some type in AC Shadows, but in the month since launch there hasn’t been any official or unofficial mention as to what they are planning or even if they are still intending on delivering a multiplayer mode. That was the case until now, as new discoveries have only recently been made leading to rumors about the game’s future. According to a post on X by a video game modder who goes by the handle Sliderv2, datamining revealed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows bootstrap file includes several instances of multiplayer being mentioned in the game’s code such as “TST_Multiplayer_Meo.” Further expressed was the likelihood of a PVP mode shown through code lines such as “RED_PVP_Maps” and “RED_PVP_Gym,” with Codename Red being the internal working title for Assassin’s Creed Shadows during development.
The last multiplayer Assassin’s Creed game in general was AC Unity in 2014, and it cast aside the PVP mode in favor of a cooperative mission mode. In the decade or so since then, many fans of the franchise have expressed their interest and hope for a new PVP mode that allows them to take on real players in the online space. If handled properly, Ubisoft could create something that would likely be welcomed by current players, and perhaps even bring back gamers from previous releases who are interested in competitive multiplayer stealth action. I’m looking forward to following this story as it develops, and to see what Ubisoft can come up with inside the modern framework of their most recent release. Are you excited, skeptical, or tired of multiplayer being included in otherwise single player experiences? Let me know what you think in the comments below.
